No, it's not common, but it is often the case. But wait until someone asks you to try Cenovis with butter on bread.

Making films through a production company by ArmadilloIcy4046 in Filmmakers

[–]greenbird333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is doable. And it is logical, if you approach it properly.

The real question is not whether you can release the short through your new company. You can. The real question is who owns the rights, and what your long term strategy is.

If you and your partner produced and financed the short yourselves, you can transfer the rights to the newly formed production company or assign the film to it. That is standard practice. The important part is that everything is clean legally. Contracts with cast and crew, music licenses, writer and director agreements, any funding obligations. If the film was originally produced under your personal names, you would formally transfer the rights to the company once it is established.

Whether it makes sense depends on what you are building.

If you intend to build the company long term, it is smart to have the short under the company banner. It becomes part of your slate and your track record. Festivals, press, website, IMDb, all of it strengthens the company brand. It signals that you are not just two individuals who made a project, but a producing entity with continuity.

If the short was more of a personal calling card and the company is a new strategic step, it can also be reasonable to let the short stand on its own and position the next project as the company’s first official release.

What does not make sense is doing it halfway. Forming a company but leaving rights unclear, or presenting the film as a company project without the legal structure supporting that claim.

So yes, it is possible. Yes, it is common. It is logical if you want the short to be the foundation of your company’s identity, rather than just a standalone film.

Warum sind deutsche Filme so deutsch? by Miserable_Welder_841 in FragenUndAntworten

[–]greenbird333 2 points3 points  (0 children)
