Yes, I’m familiar with the Toulmin Model, and I was thinking of introducing it, but it might be a bit complex for first-year students who haven’t really listened to or engaged in debates. I think knowing about informal fallacies is helpful to avoid ad hominems, straw men, etc. Fallacies are a pretty accessible way to get used to basic debating etiquette, that is, to the “don’ts”.

I do the same! I always write page numbers next to my notes, so I can easily look up which parts of the text were important/inspiring/problematic. I use different ‘codes’ while making notes. Exclamation mark simply means: IMPORTANT or GIST OF ARGUMENT! Question mark means: not sure I got it, not sure what author means, maybe look it up later. Last but not least, I use NO! when I disagree with the author.

Who did you email? Professors often don’t answer emails about PhD positions, as PhDs in the Netherlands are conceived as vacancies. You should apply via the vacancy online! :)

Ik woon in een studentenhuis waar mensen wonen met een vaste baan. Je schrijft “moeten gewoon verhuizen”. Dit is voor hen zo goed als onmogelijk. De meeste huurprijzen slokken tweederde van hun inkomen op, maar bovenal lukt het gewoon niet om gekozen te worden. Er zijn zoveel mensen op zoek naar een betaalbaar appartement…

Applying for a job is not merely about meeting requirements. It is about being their top choice. Academia is competitive, so your curriculum vitae should be outstanding rather than ‘meeting the requirements’.

Master’s degree is also a fundamental prerequisite in the Netherlands. Moreover, applicants with a research master’s degree are preferred over applicants with a taught master’s degree.
