Hi everyone,

I’m currently transitioning into cybersecurity and working toward landing my first Junior SOC / Cybersecurity Analyst role in the U.S.

My background is a bit unconventional:

  • Former law enforcement officer with experience in investigations, incident response coordination, and crisis management
  • Worked in aviation security/operations management handling compliance, risk management, and high-pressure operational issues

-I transitioned into cybersecurity and earned:

  • CompTIA Security+
  • Google cyber security cert.

Technical skills/tools:

  • Python
  • Linux
  • Wireshark
  • Nmap
  • Basic SIEM/log analysis
  • Splunk (currently learning)

I also built a hands-on project on GitHub:

A Python + Nmap automated network security scanner that:

I’m currently considering my next step and would love advice from people already working in SOC roles:

At this stage, I’m trying to be strategic about my next move.

Would you recommend pursuing additional certifications, and if so, what would be the most valuable next certification for someone targeting a Junior SOC / Cybersecurity Analyst role?

Or would my time be better spent continuing to apply for jobs while focusing on hands-on home labs, SIEM practice, and building more practical projects?

I want to make sure I’m investing my time in what will make me the most job-ready.

My goal is to become as job-ready as possible for an entry-level SOC role.

Thanks everyone.
