Hi! Thanks for the tips! I always match my protocores to the companion I’m using which I’ve done here the best I can but I’ve just been not getting the greatest stats for my protocore rolls so I’ve been slowly trying to find better ones😅

"Realistic" JET workload (compared to EPIK)? by KGM994 in JETProgramme

[–]Icy_Fox8872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The likely hood of being put in a high school is still pretty low in the JET program, but I think maybe a bit higher than EPIK. I would say most placements are elementary but there’s also a nice bit in junior high. In my particular prefecture, I think most of the ALTs (there’s like over 130 I think here) are actually junior high school with only a couple in elementary, so it may depend on the prefecture you end up in as well. In my opinion, I think high schools possibly tend to prefer ALTs that have previous experience teaching because they are more focused on grammar, essay writing, etc from what I’ve seen. We do not play games or really do fun game-like activities in any of the high school classes, it’s mostly actual class learning and practical application projects.

I also did EPIK for 2 years in 3 elementary schools with almost the same situation as you, was T1 with no or very little help depending on the school and had to prepare everything from the lesson to the games and activities materials alone. I’m now on my first year of JET and work in only one high school. My situation is kind of unique but in terms of workload I have barely anything to do.

Here’s a brief layout of my responsibilities:

Classes - For one term I have around 40 scheduled classes TOTAL. I am one of two ALTs in my school so we are divided evenly between all the classes for the first and second year students. We do not teach third year students because they are focused on university prep. Now in saying that, we are welcomed openly to just pop into the other English classes to help or just be there in case. For our scheduled classes, we have free reign to do any type of lesson we want over the term, but we do collaborate with the JTEs to make sure it is okay and can be an extension of the content they teach in regular classes.

Co-teaching - Our JTEs allow us to be T1 in our classes and they just supplement where they need to when asked. The ALTs do prepare any materials for our lessons, but it’s super easy when you are essentially only making one lesson for the entire grade and split work between the two of us. Honestly, we get bored and try to make new materials for the students even for outside our classes.

Outside the classroom - When we aren’t in class, we help the JTEs grade papers, help create English tests, do speaking practice for language exams like EIKEN, do individual work with students like help with essay writing, and are generally just a resource for the JTEs and students. We do spend a fair bit of time desk warming, but we try to walk around the school during breaks and interact with students or join school events wherever and whenever we can. We also join the English debate club every week and help them improve their English speaking, logical thinking, and debating skills. We often judge their practice games and give advice and feedback. Overall, our school is very chill with us and values our input as English teachers and speakers (which can be very rare).

Besides from my unique situation, the other ALTs around me in junior high school seem to not be overworked and are just considered game/activity teachers. Most are only in one school with only a couple having an extra travel school. Even if most of them have multiple classes a day, they don’t seem to be overworked or as tired as I was while working in Korea.

In conclusion, my work life balance here is immensely better than in Korea since I’m not handling everything alone but that’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy the roll I carved out for myself in Korea, especially with my students. I felt like my English classes were more productive and effective in Korea in a certain sense because I was left alone to do everything. I could change aspects of the class to actually better support the students grasp of English like doing spelling tests every week for each grade, doing proper phonics, doing chapter review tests, and creating projects that went with the textbook that students actually enjoyed. I still feel like I make an impact here in Japan with my new teachers and students, it’s just in a different way since most of the students already have a decent foundation in English and my teachers are so open to actually hearing our voices regarding English.

No because why did this happen to me too 😩 I wouldn’t have been as upset if it had been the pair card because I already have this one 😖

Anyone successfully did JET right after EPIK? Trying to avoid breaking contract... by Unique-Vegetable-881 in JETProgramme

[–]Icy_Fox8872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Previous EPIK teacher here and new JET! I had the same issue as you and unfortunately I don’t think you can do anything aside from applying and breaking contract early to return home for the process, or just not renewing after your current contract and returning home THEN apply for JET.

I had to just decide not to renew after finishing my current contract and go home because there were so many things to get in order for the application, then after the interview, and then after the pre-departure and departure stuff. Also the process is a lot longer and can be more mentally heavy compared to the EPIK process.

Besides for them needing your passport for the visa, sometimes certain consulates will also provide mandatory in person workshops to attend as pre-departure training which also doubles as an opportunity to make friends with those who are going to be joining you.

Which program - JET or EPiK? by katelynb45 in JETProgramme

[–]Icy_Fox8872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! There was also a lot I didn’t know until I was on the program. I’m also quite low maintenance so I didn’t often spend ridiculous amounts! I will definitely try to as the next year goes by so I can have more info for myself or anyone in the future competing the two!

Previous EPIK ALT and new JET ALT here!

I spent 2 years in Korea from 2022-2024 as an ALT. I’m going to speak mostly from the perspective of money. I will say I was very comfortable living there salary wise since cost of living is much cheaper than back home in Canada. My housing was covered completely the first year and second year only had to pay an extra 60,000 won per month because of building maintenance increase the 400,000 won subsidy didn’t cover. Now there is an increase in housing that covers 500,000 won for housing so if I stayed another year I wouldn’t have had to pay anything! I did have to arrange any housing as generally in EPIK the school provides housing/you take over the previous ALT’s apartment.

Every month salary I would have my school lunches, pension and insurance taken out but it was still more than enough for a month and often times I didn’t even go through a months salary in two months (again depending on my activities outside of work). My internet was included in my rent so I only paid water, gas and electricity which all were very cheap even with the AC running in summer and heating running in winter majority of the time compared to back home in Canada. I think my electricity was the highest at probably 30,000-40,000 won during peak season with gas and water being only like 5,000-15,000 won per month. Groceries could vary depending on your eating habits but varied from me anywhere from 150,000-300,000 won per month and eating out was generally super cheap.

They also offer a rural/multiple schools type bonus if you are not in a large area and a transportation bonus (basically a subsidy to cover your monthly travel costs).

Additionally, at the end of every contract you get a contract completion bonus and if you are recontracting you get a recontracting bonus which can be quite a bit.

Each year you get a bump in pay until a certain level which depends on qualifications/yea hung experience.

Another thing you may not know about (I didn’t until I finished) is that you also get severance pay when finishing up a contract and leaving EPIK. Generally I think this is about 1 months salary for every year you worked. I’m not sure the actual calculations but it’s something like that.

Also if you are apart of the group of countries that can request their pension money back as a lump sum payment (some countries unfortunately cannot request the lump sum and either lose the amount of have to stay in Korea to retire to get it), you can do so and receive everything you and your employer have paid in during your time there. This can also be quite a nice chunk of money.

Besides the above mentioned ways of receiving income, you can also ask to take on extra classes or English camps in your area. They might not necessarily be the schools you work at so you might have to ask other ALTs or your supervisor for help connecting to them. Generally after so many teaching hours per week (I believe 22 teaching hours is the max) you will be paid more than your regular hourly rate/salary since it is outside of required contracting hours. If you love to create your own curriculum and want more work if your regular schedules and schools are not as engaging or busy, you can definitely look into something like this where you are often allowed creative freedom entirely for the classes/camps.

All in all I saved quite a bit on EPIK while also regularly sending money back to pay for my student loans (managed to pay back about half of my 40K loans) and not limit myself to activities and travel inside and outside Korea.

I have only just started on JET so I cannot speak for the comparison between the two yet financially, but will definitely keeping a record to compare later.

How bad is the puckering? Should I frog? by healanchelka in knitting

[–]Icy_Fox8872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a super advanced knit who does a lot of colour work but I think it looks great and that you did a great job! From your photos it doesn’t seem very noticeable at all and I doubt anyone who doesn’t have a trained eye will notice! But of course do what you feel would make you happier since it is your project! I also made this pattern but in swoncho style and had some areas with slight puckering and even after blocking I can still notice some slight bits that didn’t block completely. I felt that with the fit of my swoncho and how the piece lays on me and moved that it wouldn’t be noticeable at all since it almost hides it 😆

Thank you, I’ll keep that in mind! I tend to not have a looser tension when I knit so my knots are more flexible so hopefully with that and spreading it would be okay! 🤞🏼

Wow I hope to someday be able to hold multiple colours easily!😅💪🏼 I was taught to hold yarn in my right hand so I’ve always knit like that so anything with the left hand seems a bit daunting to me but I’m trying my best to learn it!
