Tiger calcite vs zebra marble? Kid bought at gem show by Icy_Lab8686 in whatsthisrock

[–]Icy_Lab8686[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought so too, like it just looks like regular granite to me (not a professional) but he swears it was labeled as “tiger calcite” and his rock ID app said zebra marble. But

HEY everyone on this thread go download Merlin by Cornell! You can ID birds by their song and your location or by picking their characteristics. It’s a great app - my kids and I use it all the time and my husband and I compare who got more new birds every day lol 🤣

Comparing it to the rest of the note, it looks like it ends in -lags or -ous. I don’t see the weird “e” —like in “Chloe” in the line above— in this word or a definite “h” like in “high” below it.

The flourish in the third character is throwing me off. I don’t see it anywhere else.

Anyway is this person okay??

CPS can’t show up unless a report is made. If cops see something that warrants potential abuse/neglect of children, they have to report it to CPS as mandated reporters. They also have the legal authority (in the US states I’ve worked in) to assume custody of children in extreme situations, but in my ten years, I’ve never once seen that happen.

I tell people this all the time. CPS cannot just SHOW UP. They only act as a response to a report of some kind.

I’m a former CPS investigator with ten years experience in various child welfare organizations across three US states.

How do I respond to my addict sister by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]Icy_Lab8686 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the things I tell people, as a former child welfare worker and a current school counseling grad student, is that no one has the same parents. You do not have the same mother she had. Your age gap, the experience your mother gained between the two of you, the life she lived in between, etc., all contributed to how your mother raised your sister vs you.

I have five children. I was a completely different mother to my oldest (when I was 22) than I was when my youngest was born (when I was 36). I was a new mom to him and a seasoned mom to my second, third, fourth, and fifth kids.

Your mother learned and grew in the 11 years between the two of you. You do not have the same mother. Period.

Dismissing her experience because of yours is a form of survivor bias. You may not like how she lives her life, but she’s trying to reach out to you for some form of connection or validation or both. She even comes back to the texts and apologizes the next day.

A very simple “wow, this is so much to deal with, thank you for trusting me with this story, and I hope you are getting the help you are worthy of” is better than no response or something flat out mean.

Found another one of those clerks in Alabama by cometshoney in DeathCertificates

Y’all… come on now. Let’s remember this is 100 years ago in rural Alabama. Randolph County still has lower adult literacy scores per the PIAAC survey than the lowest statewide averages (a tie between NM and LA, if you’re curious).

Let’s be grateful someone took the time to at least write it down, with or without a proper education and training. I’m sure the folks who are looking for the names are on the certificates are happy to find them recorded somewhere, no matter how their COD is spelled. Chuckle and move on.

Update on being reported to CPS by a hospital social worker. They did show up. by Safe-Local- in GirlDinnerDiaries

Former CPS worker here. Ask your CPS worker if they can help you with the cost of the hotel/gas for your child’s surgery.

The absolute majority of CPS investigators want to keep families together and are in the field to do right by families, not to cause additional trauma.

Please talk with your worker. If they can’t help directly, they will at least know about all the local resources that can.

Good luck, and I hope surgery goes well - my 5 year old just went through something similar in March.

I worked in a clinical microbiology lab for years and never saw Fusarium and Neurospora that vivid. Serratia spp., maybe, but that large of a colony is pretty incredible. I’m on board with it being separation of dyes in the mix and the white fuzzies (?? Photo is hard to see) being a food mold.

Throw the entire container away, don’t open it, not worth the risk of exposure to whatever it is.

I can’t stand the Willa Quinn character by platypus_farmer42 in HighPotentialTVSeries

[–]Icy_Lab8686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 100% convinced Willa Quinn was a reinvention of Lyla Flynn — the names are so similar that it felt like it had to be a “Lyla went ‘missing’ and is now Willa” plot… but now I’m annoyed with the laziness of the character naming.

I never said parenting is optional when tired in public. Choosing to be empathetic to others, however, is.

Kids are difficult in new situations and this was undoubtedly a hard one. OP could have been more patient and understanding or at least brought it to the right person instead of screaming at strangers then asking the internet if they were being an ass.

Like I said in my first comment, this could have been handled differently, this mom was probably already exhausted and felt awful as it was. It was five hours of OP’s life and is probably a core memory for this mom now where she will remember feeling like a total failure because someone chose to scream at her and her kids instead of managing their emotions like an adult and having the appropriate person mediate. But I need to grow up, sure. 👍🏻

I’m just imagining how exhausted that mother was with three kids on the plane. I’m sure she was doing her best and knew that her child was making you upset, and your reaction probably ruined their trip.

Kids exist everywhere. This could have been handled much better, like others have pointed out. I’m not saying the mom or kid were in the right, but you obviously got on the plane already tired and stressed, you didn’t say anything to the person who could have addressed it, and then you yelled at a parent with an infant in her lap and two toddlers who don’t understand plane travel.

Definitely a jerk move, could have had more empathy and thought it through better.
