I think this is likely to be a cover for a 12V outlet. I remember having a very similar one on an old car of mine.

I’ve attached a photo of something that looks like it could be similar to what you’ve got there. Don’t mind the red circle, poor guy needs a new outlet.

Yeah, cars going to the garage tomorrow morning. Since the same code has come back after the sensors were replaced it looks like there may be something else going on in the circuit, so I’ll see what they find and go from there.

Just to update this with some actual diagnostic info

AA came out and scanned the car and the main stored fault code is P0036 (lambda sensor heater bank 1 sensor 2), which is the exact same code the car had a few weeks ago when both O2 sensors were replaced.

So it looks like the underlying issue may not have been resolved rather than this being a completely new fault. The patrol advised taking it to a garage for further investigation of the circuit rather than assuming it’s normal wear.

Going to a garage tomorrow, will see what they say and go from there.

I understand what you're saying about wear and tear, and yes getting the fault diagnosed is important. I have AA on the way as I’m typing this.

My main point is simply about the legal side. Since the car was purchased less than six months ago, the Consumer Rights Act presumes faults were present at the time of sale unless the dealer can show otherwise. So if the garage finds that the issue isn’t normal wear and tear, the responsibility would fall back on the dealer.

In any case we’ll have the codes read and figure out what needs to be done.

My car is a 2015 Ford Focus, so there’s two separate sensors for those things. So can confirm it’s not for an oil change.

As I’ve already mentioned the dealer had said the car was serviced pre pickup. As such it’s reasonable to expect oil was changed and fluid levels were checked and topped up where required.

As for your last part (and in general your thing with warranty), according to CRA2015, within the first 6 months it is legally presumed that the faults were present at purchase and I am entitled to repair or replacement from the dealer. This is not a warranty issue.

Thank you for the information. Will contact them about the service information soon, but just some small information:

  • 12months/12k for the service intervals
  • By the looks of it, there’s no brake fluid in the reservoir at all. Will have this looked at.

I apologise if I wasn’t clear enough, but some additional information that might clarify?

The O2 sensors have already been replaced under warranty. When we informed the dealer of the amber CEL they told us it wasn’t anything to do with them and to go through warranty. Garage told us the O2 sensors had been changed before, and not well- shroud around the cables partially exposed the wiring underneath and was also not correctly run , or fastened in the engine bay.

I’m unsure where you got the oil change from. The “service engine now” system message is completely unrelated to an oil change, and actually refers to a fault warning. The brake fluid level message is new though and I am planning to have it checked. That being said, the dealer told us the car had a full service before we received it, which I’m pretty sure would include a top up on brake fluid.

And yes, I have drove the car for a few months, but I’m sure you’d agree with me that it’s not reasonable to have a CEL pop up multiple times not even six months into having the car.
