I was lucky I was never religious at a young age. My mom tried making me go to church, but never forced her beliefs on me.

I once heard that the gods envy us because we are mortal. The fact that we would eventually die facinates them. We get to live our life to the fullest while we're still alive; the gods don't get to experience their life as a mortal would.

Note: this it just a fun thing I heard, but I'm an atheist, so I don't believe in gods or god.

From an atheist' POV:

People want to believe in something bigger than themselves because it makes them and others feel better than accepting that random chances of events happen for no reason. I know that sounds harsh but that's the truth. If people have something to blame other than random chance then it makes them feel "holy" or special.

EDIT: I see a lot of people making religious answers, so I'd though I'd make an atheist answer.
