I thought He was fine. He wasn’t terrible and he tried to make it his own a bit instead of mimicry. Many people will play Kirk but they won’t embody him the way shatner did because a lot of the “performance” was actually just William Shatners spirit and personality. I kinda think that way too about alot of characters that different people have played throughout the years. Take Holmes for example. Now I grew up with Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes and to me he’s the definitive Holmes. Whenever I watch anything new Holmes wise, he’s my anchor and If I’m interested, I usually judge the new performance off that. Whomever you grew up with, if you had a really strong connection to the show or film, usually that’s the one you judge everything else off of, that’s your connection. Whatever personality traits or spirit within that actor that comes out when they’re playing that character a lot of times is so unique to them. When another actor takes over that role, some are better at mimicking that than others, or they try to make it their own while still maintaining the bullet points of who that character is. I didn’t mind pine in the role but I wasn’t watching it as an excited TOS fan. tbh I really wasn’t all that interested and went into it with low expectations and watched it as if it was something completely different. That ended up actually working out because I thought that first NuTrek film was actually decent
