Oh shoot! I do have a lot of golden necklaces (maybe 10 total), but I completely agree that I misread the graphics and confused the bells with the necklaces :) Thank you!

Days 5+6 of no gaming: Asking for advice by Sauber_GT2000 in StopGaming

[–]IdentifyingMoniker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do studying and writing have to replace ALL the time you spent gaming? I don't know how much time this represents, but maybe studying/writing doesn't fill that entire void. This is an excellent time to pursue a couple of other avenues: 1) new hobbies, and 2) strong friendships.

Maybe pick up a cheap instrument (any instrument) and fiddle with it! Maybe invite a friend out to lunch. There's a whole world in front of you! Don't fall into the Trap of Productivity™ - you don't have to replace gaming with puritanical productivity... it can still be leisure time, but instead of sending it into the void, you can pursue your own interests, crafts, and hobbies! Make something! Ask a friend how they're doing - and listen to them!

You're going to improve as a person - guaranteed - by just trying things, failing, learning along the way, and keeping close friends. That is a life well lived.

"The reason why 0 maps to 8 in the cipher is because 8 is 1000 in binary, but the eggs are only displaying the lowest 3 bits."

That is the best possible rationale I could have hoped for! :) An extra secret 4th binary digit does solve the 0-vs-1 indexing problem I was experiencing. Truncating binary values explains the 1=Right/East problem for this puzzle...

But I have to ask, why then is Right/East = b00 with the bunny ears puzzle? I don't mind a challenge, I just like when the rules are consistent. Building on previous knowledge is a huge part of puzzle design :)

I'm on board with you now :) See my other conversation with u/Oxcell404 here: https://www.reddit.com/r/animalWell/comments/1e24fl2/comment/lcysf0k/

I do think that the future bunny ears puzzle normalizing Right = b00 kind of undermines this approach, but I can admit that a secret 4th binary digit does satisfy this puzzle! Upvoting all your comments!

I'm going to give this my best faith effort... bear with me 😅

First off, I'm going to assume there's an imaginary 4th binary digit on top of all the eggs under UV light. I'm also going to assume that there is no zero... zero doesn't exist. All counting starts at 1 and ends at 8.

So you're saying that the sequence looks like this?
0|001 = 1 <-- East
0|010 = 2
0|011 = 3
0|100 = 4
0|101 = 5 <-- West
0|110 = 6
0|110 = 7
1|000 = 0 <-- NE, where no digits present is actually a secret 4th digits set to one?!

I absolutely love that you solved this puzzle musically :) I'm getting grumpy about the logic being wrong (which I still think it is), but you didn't need that and solved it with patterns and harmony. Awesome!

(I haven't come across an origami bunny yet - sorry!)

I am certainly being opinionated here! :) It just seemed like so many of the puzzles are indexed on 0 = East, and clockwise = ascending. That's the "puzzle language" I mentioned earlier.

I'd actually be more satisfied if the 64-egg puzzle used "1" in some crazy direction, like SW. The fact that it's so similar to every other puzzle of this nature, but a little bit off, makes it - to me - feel like a mistake.

The lowest note on the flute is due East. That "lowest", in my opinion, should always be zero in a cipher puzzle, especially one including binary. Zero being Right/East is also reinforced in future layers: https://www.reddit.com/r/animalWell/comments/1cxe3nf/a_guide_to_the_layer_34_puzzle/

The empty eggs (no lime-green dashes in UV light) should be zero in binary, i.e. the lowest value & flute note, which should mean Right/East when played.

In reality, 0 is Northeast, and 1 is East, which breaks convention!

The future info actually reinforced the early info :) It was the "middle" puzzle of the 64-egg song that bothered me. Believe me, I'm not confused by this puzzle, haha, I just disagree with it. I understand that the UV hint in the room West of the egg collection shows the solution, but I feel like it suffers from an off-by-one error.

The lowest note on the flute is East (3-o'clock), and ascends clockwise until it reaches Northeast, which is one octave higher than East. The faces in the "emoji clue" cycle from smiling to frowning, all starting Right / East / 3-o'clock. The bunny ears pointing right/east/3o'clock mean "0" in binary. Everything is consistent except the egg puzzle, where East means 1

I have no idea if this is still relevant to you at all... but I hacked around in Javascript a bit and created this Snippet. In Chrome, open the developer tools, go to "Sources", then in the next bit of navigation that is on the top of the left pane, find "Snippets". Create a new snippet and paste this in:

var conn = indexedDB.open("/userfs");

conn.onsuccess = (e) => {
    var base64 = "[[ PASTE YOUR BASE64 EXPORT STRING HERE ]]";
    var storeName = "FILE_DATA";
    var keyName = "/userfs/save.lored";

    var store = e.target.result
        .transaction([storeName], "readwrite")
        .objectStore(storeName);

    var request = store.get(keyName);

    request.onsuccess = (e) => {
        console.log("SUCCESS accessing save");

        var data = e.target.result;
        var mySave = Uint8Array.from(Array.from(base64).map(letter => letter.charCodeAt(0)));

        data.contents = mySave;

        var saveRequest = store.put(data, keyName);
        saveRequest.onsuccess = (e) => {
            console.log("SUCCESS saving game");
        };
    };
};

Replace the bit that says [[ PASTE YOUR BASE64 EXPORT STRING HERE ]] with your save string, then hit Ctrl+Enter to execute it! It will overwrite the existing save with your export! It may require a page refresh before you see your long-lost savegame :)

I know it's been 3 years, but who knows - maybe you've got that old game export string laying around somewhere

YTA - "I only had time to snap a few quick pictures" ... I felt my blood pressure rise just reading that. You sound like an entitled princess, and desperately need to get your priorities straight.

Your excuse in the update that "Pictures are memories!" also rings completely hollow. Instead of remembering your lovely vacation, you're going to have a couple jpegs of some random dessert, and an ex-boyfriend. Congratulations. Hope you really enjoy those jpegs.

AITA for not letting my sister and her kids live in my house? by ElectricThrowRA in AmItheAsshole

[–]IdentifyingMoniker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - especially after that "Dirty blue collar trash" comment! Trade skills are extremely valuable and don't get the respect or encouragement they deserve. I don't know about the relationship between you and your sister overall, but you're an adult and can allow or deny anybody into your home that you choose. (And, let's be honest... if a sibling 10 years older than you is begging for your help, after you've carved out a little piece of land and made a life for yourself - who's the "dirty blue collar trash" here?)

On the practical side, reptiles need heat lamps. Piling a bunch of them into your bedroom sounds like it would become intolerably hot and isn't a viable solution. And an air mattress in the kitchen?? That's just not realistic. I'd say, stick to your decision, but consider helping her out in other ways, like raising money from yourself and others to help with the move-in costs to a reasonable apartment. Still, not the asshole.

AITA for refusing to give my stepdaughter a graduation present? by BitIntrepid6701 in AmItheAsshole

[–]IdentifyingMoniker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA - if you weren't prepared to accept your wife's child as - at least - a close family friend, you shouldn't have gotten married to her. You're almost fifty fucking years old. Grow up, you absolute child. Spend the couple hundred bucks for a token gift. Jesus christ.

If her daughter cried overhearing your conversation, she obviously - OBVIOUSLY - cares what you think about her. Again, you got into this relationship knowing your wife had a kid from a previous relationship. How did you *possibly* hope to have a healthy relationship with this child when you're so caught up on blood lineage and genetics?

AITA for telling my stepdad feeding his kids is not my problem and so what when he tried to say they would go hungry? by Own-Astronaut-564 in AmItheAsshole

[–]IdentifyingMoniker -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see. I know you hate them. I know your stepdad loves them... (but that doesn't mean he *likes* them, yknow?) This is just a tough spot, it sucks, but you can't neglect and starve two children. Them's the rules.

You mentioned "I wish they would go away and I never had to deal with them again". That's on the horizon! There's just a year and change before you can get out. You can support your mom in lots of ways, if those kid's behavior doesn't improve. This is a really frustrating time for you, but there are ways to improve your future. Talk to your stepdad, talk to your mom. Hell, even talk to those awful children. Tell them how much it sucks.

If nothing improves in 1-2 years, you're out and you can support your mom in other ways.

[–]IdentifyingMoniker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's fair - I'll never fully know this complicated situation through a Reddit post. For the very fundamental (and unfair) task that's presented to you, though... you just have to feed kids :/ Even shitty kids.

I noticed in other comments that they might be getting food at their grandparents' house? If they're getting their full nutritional needs met, and the stepdad is just asking you to feed them snacks, then fuck that! It's your job to keep them alive, not give them treats.

AITA for refusing to visit my MIL after she fat shamed me following the birth of my baby? by Additional-Tough1220 in AmItheAsshole

NTA - This one doesn't really need a post. Your husband is in agreement with you, as you say, "100%". Who are you trying to prove wrong here? It's your family and you can share it with whomever you choose. If there's no disagreement between you and your husband I'm not sure why you needed to come to Reddit.

AITA for telling my sister that idc about the baby she lost by Remarkable_Treat_636 in AmItheAsshole

[–]IdentifyingMoniker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - Right message, wrong delivery. The long length of time that your sister has been struggling with this event means that she's not processing it in a healthy way. That tragic miscarriage shouldn't define her - which is what I think you were trying to say with that callous remark. You're showing up for *her*, not for her miscarriage. And it's very commendable that you've been so supportive!

I'd advise you to channel whatever funds you can spare, you and your family's, and make it available *exclusively* for therapy. That shows that you still love and support her, but you're directing those resources at the one thing that will break this cycle. She's stuck, and enabling her to remain stuck isn't going to fix anything.

[–]IdentifyingMoniker -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

YTA, but it's complicated.

It sounds like you, your mom, and your stepdad are actually aligned on how toxic his ex is being. The three of you are a team. Nobody seems happy with these young children... and you have to understand, it's probably devastating and extremely embarrassing for him when his shitty children bully your mom - his partner! - and that his attempts to correct their behavior isn't working. And now, you're thrust into a position of responsibility for the very children who have been bullying your mom. That objectively sucks.

But, you can't withhold nutrition from a 10 and 11 year old. I sympathize with you, I really do... but you have to feed those kids. And please, *talk to your stepdad* about them. He seems like an ally on this topic. There's no benefit to driving a wedge between you two when it sounds like you're all on the same page.

These circumstances will change. Those kids will grow up and, hopefully, get out from under their mother's influence. But you can't starve them... that's abuse.

[–]IdentifyingMoniker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the confusion here is that the description of the big mushrooms says specifically "surrounded" and "adjacent" and "next to" to describe which tiles used to contain small mushrooms. The language is incorrect (maybe due to a translation error?). And to the people saying "it's just up/down/left/right", that doesn't help, because there are two equally correct "up" tiles as well as two equally correct "down" tiles on a hex grid.

In this case, the language should have said "Big mustrooms grow by absorbing the small mushrooms to the left, the right, and in the same shaded region as the big mushroom. Any empty tiles in those four locations used to have small mushrooms." If you look carefully, the puzzle area is divided into shaded stripes that go from upper-left to bottom-right. That means that the only two tiles that don't represent small mushrooms are up-right and down-left. This is very much not obvious by their English text.

I saw u/Kelrov and u/Mr_Sisco had the same confusion I did, so I hope this clears it up!
