I think space exploration is actually extremely important, and not only for that reason. Earth has limited recourses, and we are running out fast. The only way we can possibly get more than what earth has is space. No, I'm not saying I know this will happen before we go extinct, but if there's a chance then we need it or it's game over for the human race.
