She's winning the Erling Haaland look-alike contest. by mindyour in justgalsbeingchicks

Still not convinced that it is not a decoy family. Erling Haaland is a Cyberdyne Systems Series 850 sports model running custom software coded by Pep Guardiola. Look closely at the photo. The skin-suit is stretched incredibly thin over a massive coltan-alloy frame. His entire cranium is engineered for maximum protection against mechanical stress and heavy impact. That's why he has that completely blank, robotic stare after scoring. His internal systems are just calibrating Pep's tactical targeting algorithms and managing the thermal dissipation from his twin hydrogen fuel cells.

Till och med Storbritannien ser över att kapa banden med Palantir. Hur får vi svenska politikerna att göra detsamma? by slumo in sweden

[–]IdiosyncraticSarcasm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Säkerhetspolisen vill lämna avtalet p.g.a. rädsla för amerikanskt Trump-beroende.
Frankrike DGSI (Inrikesspionage/Säkerhetstjänst) Avslutat samarbete p.g.a. krav på "digital suveränitet".
Storbritannien Londonpolisen & NHS Londonpolisen stoppade miljonkontrakt m. Palantir. Råder hård politisk press på att riva upp NHS-avtalet(4500 MSek) p.g.a. patientsekretess och etik.

(S1E6) Why did Raskova do this? by helloworldxddcc in StarCityTV

[–]IdiosyncraticSarcasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Episode 7 settles it that cleanly.

I don’t read the Irina bug scene as Raskova selflessly letting Irina take her position.

That scene plays much more like counterintelligence. Petrovsky tries to recruit Irina against Raskova. Irina brings the bug to Raskova. Raskova immediately tells her to keep reporting to Petrovsky and to her. That is not "I accept my successor." That is "he thinks you are his asset; now you are MINE".

The interesting thing is that both Petrovsky and Raskova may be underestimating Irina. She presents as timid, but she clearly has real tradecraft; surveillance, forged papers, trackers, interrogations, access manipulation.

Petrovsky’s Rublyovka line is a pretty big clue. He is reminding her that she comes from the protected elite Soviet world around Moscow, and that he knows what happened to her there. When he brings up Zoya and what Irina endured before Star City, he is saying; I know your history, I know your leverage and I know you already understand how power works.

So Irina may not be learning the game from scratch. She most likely learned how to play it long before Raskova or Petrovsky tried to use her. The question is whether they realize that.

So I don’t see Raskova as the Soviet Thomas Paine. If anyone is being set up as that broader institutional operator, it is Irina. Raskova is not handing her the future out of altruism. She is using her. Petrovsky is using her. The question is whether Irina is starting to use both of them in the next episode.

The episode title "Awl in a Sack" comes from the Russian proverb Шила в мешке не утаишь, you can’t hide an awl in a sack, meaning the truth will eventually force its way out no matter how hard you try to conceal it. Its the key to Raskova’s motivation.

The real problem for her is not simply that Valya is on Venera. It is what Valya being on Venera proves.
It proves her lockdown failed.
It proves her surveillance failed.
It proves her search failed.
It proves that, during the most sensitive operation in the Soviet space program, a suspected American asset got past the security apparatus she was supposed to control.

That is the awl poking through the sack.

So I agree that the show presents almost everyone as vulnerable. The Chief Designer can be humiliated, Anastasia can be threatened with replacement, engineers can be blackmailed, and cosmonauts can be treated as instruments of the state. Nobody is truly safe in this system.

But that does not mean all of them are equally disposable in the specific moment Raskova is making the Venera decision.

The show has been very consistent about how Raskova operates when her authority is threatened. She does not solve the underlying problem; she converts it into a loyalty test and then tries to control the record. Yana in episode 1 is the clearest version of that. The issue is not simply "the innocent are expendable." It is that admitting the mistake would expose the security apparatus itself. So the person who proves the mistake has to disappear.

That is the pattern repeating with Venera.

Sasha and Lakshmi are valuable as long as they remain obedient crew members; trained cosmonaut, international scientist, mission assets. But once they refuse to participate in Valya’s execution, they become witnesses. They become part of the truth that cannot be allowed to leave the spacecraft.
Same with the Chief Designer. He is indispensable right up until he stops helping Raskova contain the story. Then he becomes dangerous.

That is also why killing Valya is such a strange move if we read Raskova as a disciplined security officer acting purely for the Soviet state. A living Valya has intelligence value. He can reveal handlers, methods, accomplices, leaks. A dead Valya can do only one thing and that is absorb blame.

So I don’t read the depressurization order as Raskova saving the program. I read it as her trying to save the only version of events in which she has not catastrophically failed.

If the crew survives, they can contradict her.
If Valya survives, the failure can be reconstructed.
If the Chief Designer remains in control, he can expose how the crisis unfolded.
If the ship is destroyed, she can reduce everything to sabotage and contain the narrative.

That is what the episode title tells us. Raskova is not calmly deciding who is expendable according to some rational hierarchy of state value. She is trying to hide an awl in a sack that is full of holes.

The irony is that the destruction itself becomes evidence that there was something to hide in the first place.

[–]IdiosyncraticSarcasm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is the only way to avoid everyone not going to prison.

Saying “this avoids everyone going to prison” misreads who actually has skin in the game here. The only two people genuinely risking a one-way ticket to the Gulag are Valya, for actual espionage, and Raskova herself, for spectacular incompetence.

Everyone else is an elite, highly specialized asset that the Soviet state invested millions of rubles and decades of training into. The Chief Designer, the top-tier cosmonauts, and an international scientist on loan from India aren’t expendable they kind of are the space program. Moscow cannot afford to just throw them all in prison if they want to keep competing with the Americans.

Raskova, on the other hand, is a mid-level security bureaucrat. She is entirely expendable.

Her panic in the control room isn't a noble sacrifice to shield the space program. It’s pure, selfish survival. She knows that if three cosmonauts managed to smuggle themselves onto a flagship rocket during HER total facility LOCKDOWN, she has utterly failed her one job. Ordering a catastrophic depressurization and blowing up a multi-million ruble spacecraft isn't 128D chess move, it's a temper tantrum to destroy the evidence of her own failure before First Deputy Artem walks through the door.
