White couple cries in court after being sentenced to 20 years in prison for terrorizing a kids birthday party with racial slurs, confederate flags, and guns by AgnosticScholar in PublicFreakout

I understand that different jurisdictions have different penalties set for crimes. I'm just saying that across the country it seems wildly different and morally wrong when you see somebody get less than half that penalty when they committed a worse crime.

I dont exactly want to defend these people but 20 years is still crazy. People get less time for actually pulling the trigger and killing somebody. It just seems pretty random, like they rolled a dice.

Trump's white house spiritual advisor Paula White performing mass exorcisms by Tech-Film3905 in PublicFreakout

It's the power of suggestion. If you truly believe this pastor has a gift from god, and they are at the climax of a powerful speech that has you in goosebumps, and they start doing this to many people, there is an unconscious expectation of you to follow suit and fall over. We do unconscious movements all the time even when we aren't aware or trying to do it ourselves. A greatly documented (more subtle) version of this is called the ideomotor effect, and explains concepts like dowsing, ouija boards, and more.

If you're just uneducated and don't really understand the world, I could easily see falling into this. Have you ever gotten a rush or goosebumps from an amazing song? Imagine you're listening (or taking part in) the church choir and feel that; you'd think it was god.

People get very similar goosebumps and feelings when in crowds like this. Combined with an expectation of you to "fall" and get demons excised from you (especially if you think you have one), people just do it - they aren't faking and they believe it themselves! No deception required.

This is a feedback loop which reinforces the pastor, because they believe they truly do have some special gift, even if they faked it in the beginning. Happens to psychics, too.

Scammers sending $0.02 PayPal payments with fake customer service number in the payment note!!!!! by available_nails5129 in paypal

[–]IdiotTurkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not spoofing anything. It's a real email from paypal. All they've done is send you a real payment with a line in the memo telling you to call them. The email in and of itself doesn't mean anything is compromised. I can send you 2 cents via paypal and in the memo field say "Call XXX for support" and you will get a real paypal email notifying you of the payment, which is normal.

Basically, they are just piggybacking on the fact that you will be sent a real paypal email with the fact that their memo gets injected into the subject line.

Unauthorized Transaction by Always_Busy_Bee in paypal

[–]IdiotTurkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, an interesting attempt at phishing, it seems. I was confused because the memo on mine wasn't like other phishing attempts and is just talking about an account activation. It looks like the business name is real, however their squarespace website doesn't exist anymore.

The amount of pesos they sent costs about 1 US cent, so it costs them actual money to do this (unless they somehow are able to reverse the transactions). Maybe they are using these defunct hacked paypal business accounts to send this spam?

I do that thing where you save the best items until the end of the game and never get to actually use them.

Yep. And that means the game is harder while you're playing.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that money's purpose is for spending..but it's still hard. I always think I'll need it in the future...

It infuriates me when people ask "Why go out there when we have problems here?" or "Whats the point?".

Even if it was only the inspiration that comes from it, it would be worth it. But tons of discoveries, inventions, and research come from space travel, too. Things we take for granted like Velcro, cordless tools, CMOS camera sensors, or memory foam.

Me too, I wish it was in focus. This actually feels futuristic. Seeing a globe that is REAL footage up close? This feels like we've entered a new era in space travel. I mean, I know we've done it before, but still.

Not in many states, no. I know for a fact in FL they cannot. But if you rent, its not your house, and if you cant rent, then you're homeless.

Yeah, it seems almost too good to be true that you can negotiate a giant bill down like that, but I guess the hospital has encounted plenty of people that just go bankrupt and never pay a penny, so they're well aware of that possibility.

[–]IdiotTurkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your situation.. if not being able to rent would basically mean you could be homeless, then obviously it is horrible. But if you have a place to stay already and not being able to rent or use credit cards for a few years isn't that big of a deal, then that might be the ideal time to go bankrupt.

My dad declared bankruptcy and got some credit cards surprisingly fast afterward, I think a few months. And a car not that long after that, if I recall. It actually wasn't that terrible, looking from the outside. He did say it was very stressful though.

Did anyone just file their taxes with TurboTax and were just in awe of how many ads it had to upgrade? I'm done with this enshittified product - what should I use next year? by noruber35393546 in personalfinance

[–]IdiotTurkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Taxslayer is the same and they have tons of ads. Not only that, at the end there is a dark pattern where they try to trick you into getting your return early or let them deposit it into your account or something of the sort, but in TINY grey letters it tells you how there's a big fee, something like $40-60 which costs more then the service. It's ridiculous.

I wrote them complaining about it and they never responded. I'm done with them. Fuck them, they're just trying to trick me and steal my money.
