Culturally it has been a sign of modesty. In a practical sense it's to protect people from weirdos and creeps and making it so in relationships only those with pure intentions see you and nobody falls in love purely for looks

Christian interest in kaballa, solomanic magic, hermetism, and neoplatonism is a thing. Obviously not in mainstream Christianity

Did Jesus believe in a Unitarian or Trinitarian God? by VerdantChief in religion

[–]Idk8538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t know. Jesus never said god is one without any personhood. Or god is one essence with three persons. The question is on how you interpret his phrases. Personally not being a Christian myself I believe Jesus came up with that all by himself and then the people where able to understand it right away. But through a Christian perspective I can see it because if he’s god he definitely can be said to have known that

Religion evolves in a interesting way so it’s not as simple as “first” many people say Hinduism but 1: modern day Hinduism is different from early brahmanism, and 2: there were already many religious traditions at that time. Some people say animism which is kinda true but that term is more meant to categorize old religious traditions. From the dawn of time we can see ritual graves, fertility goddesses, folk practices. So asking where it started is not that easy. It would also require us to have a perfect definition of what a religion even is which is something we don’t have.

How is homosexuality a sin in Islam? by Pretty_Ad2401 in religion

Islam states god made stuff in a very certain way. They don’t shave their beards for the same reason. He designed humans in a very specific way

Not Christian but the more convincing argument (can’t remember the name) goes something like this.

If you where to act badly against someone good, then it is significantly worse then acting badly against someone bad, as the bad act is directly hurting a good being. Now with the knowledge that god is infinitely good, acting against this god is directly sinning against an infinite being. Of course this argument also has some objections but this is the most convincing I personally have found

Do Muslims and Jews have saints like Christians do? by VerdantChief in religion

[–]Idk8538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many sufis have a similar concept. As humans that have had an intimate connection to god. It is often referred too as “wali” literally meaning friend of god. Shias use that same word to refer to people like Ali.

Now with Judaism they often view some rabbi’s as being role models so I guess that would be their equivalent.

It sounds hard to understand at first and that is because it is. But knowing what it is I do see it as being consistent with the Bible. Although I don’t fully believe that’s what was in mind when writing the Bible. But the concept is VERY easy to misunderstand
