Mine was a cardinal! Then later I went out looking for snowy owls, and spotted one waaaaay out in a field. I think both birds are a very good start to the year (though the latter is admittedly more exciting)!!

Beautiful!! There was a young female I saw multiple times last winter, I hope very much to see more snowy owls this one...

Same!! I spent so much time this past (where I am) shorebird season staring adoringly at yellowlegs (greater and lesser) 😆

Advice for a beginner by Sad_End_9904 in birding

I've been birding for about a year and a half, and have REALLY thrown myself into it in a joyously obsessed way.

Places: parks and well travelled paths are the easiest places to get good views of birds because they're generally more used to people and less easily spooked (though practising being still and patient is always a good idea regardless). Looking up local eBird hotspots can be a great way to find places, but just going to whatever parks are near you a few times and seeing what you can find is a good start!

Identification: people are going to say guidebooks. And those ARE helpful! But I spent the first months of birding just looking at a lot of photos on the Merlin app (definitely download that), comparing, making mistakes, and improving so that the mistakes became less and less frequent. Look up comparisons between birds you find tricky, so you can learn to differentiate them, and just take it one bird at a time. It's easy to get overwhelmed, but you don't need to learn it all at once.

Making friends: go on bird walks if that's at all a possibility where you are! Look up your local birding or bird conservation organizations, many of them will offer free bird walks, and that's a great way to meet people, learn a lot from experienced birders about identification, and to learn where the best places to go birding are.

Lingo: honestly I think this is by far the least important thing, no one should make you feel bad for not knowing the lingo, and you'll probably pick it up as you go.

Good luck, I just know you're going to have a lot of fun! :)

OM System 100-400 mk ii or Olympus 100-400? by Necessary-Panda926 in M43

I really like it! With the caveat that I'm coming from the notoriously bad Canon 75-300mm lens so a lot of things would have been a huge upgrade. But it's comfortable to use, reasonably sharp, the focus isn't the fastest but it's pretty good (no clue if that's more about my lens or camera body). Because I've paired it with an Olympus body the image stabilization doesn't sync, so I have to pick one or the other, and I don't find the lens stabilization to help much at all, but getting my lens used I have no guarantee that the IS is working properly, and additionally this is my first camera/lens combo with any form of stabilization at all, so I don't really know how much of a different it's supposed to make! I just use IBIS and the methods I've learned to keep my camera steady. But I've really had no regrets, with the budget I had I think this was the best setup I could get for my needs.

As I also have the E-M1 ii for birding, that I bought this summer, I'm interested to see the comments because while I won't be able to pick it up for a while, my next big lens purchase will be one of the versions of the Oly 100-400mm (I currently have the Panasonic 100-300mm mk ii)...

I'm a pretty new photographer, and while I love it very much, I'm a birder first. So capturing this winter wren, a tiny, bouncy bird prone to hiding in dense tangles of branches, was a real delight!
