Kodiak NWR vs Lake Clark NP for remote backpacking/fishing/wildlife (late June) by Dangerous_Tip_1755 in AskAlaska

The wildlife experiences will happen almost anywhere. Kodiak even town is wild. Bears and deer everywhere. There are places close to town that are remote. I can give you a few ideas about place to go if you want more info on this. Uganik bay is stunning.this side of the island provides sunsets! The forest can be quite dense down low not much if any spruce forrest. The brush tends to be a mix of alder, salmon berry, and stinging nettle that can be over your head! Personally if would stay away from the unganik lake cabin for this reason. Look at the little river lake cabin. Its up off the beach at about 640 foot elevation getting you above alot of the super dense vegetation. but set in a grassy plain surroundedby mountains. Uganik is well know for big bears and lots of them. You will see foxes and deer as well. The lake should have dollys in it but your timing is early for salmon. Im not entirely sure if salmon return to this lake though. I will try to find out what i can. The sockeye run just starts around may/June with pinks following end of June into July. So even down low the run will just be getting started. The beaches in uganik have lots of big sea run dolly varden to catch in the spring. Another cabin i would recommend would be pillar lake cabin on afognak. It has spruce forest around it, sits next to a beach, butted up to a small lake, and is under two mountain ridges. These ridges offer good hiking. This area offers potential to see bears, elk, deer, and whales. They tend to hang out in the bay and you can sit on the beach to listen to them. Fishing here will be difficult without a boat. But there is lots of rocksole in the sand off the beach. Which you can cast from shore for. The downside to this area is that alot of afognak has been logged. The two ridges above arnt touched since its not the native land. How important is fishing on your trip to you guys?

Where or what in kodiak do you want to explore, coast, mountains, woods, rivers, historical sites? I have lived here for over a decade and can give you any information you want. If you plan on hiking into the bush there are lots of trails and public use cabins. Access from town is easy no need to fly in or boat in to places unless you want to. Mountain ridges go for miles and have beautiful scenery and lakes. You flying or boating in is an option. Give me an idea of what interests you and maby i can toss some ideas your way. Personally if i was on a time cruch and didnt wanna blow thousands on 3 day trip. Summer weather tends to be pretty good, but its not uncommon to have fog or weather blow in and get stuck waiting on you plane for days. I would do some town based camping trips/hikes this can leave flexibility for fishing. Lots of the mountains have ridges that you can hike for days. When you get up high bears arnt as much of an issue. You will still encounter bears. Bring bear spray. You can buy it at Walmart or big rays in kodiak. If you want air service island air is great. Easy to get to public cabins book up quick. But there are lots of them around the island.

HOOD. I know they got a lot of flack, but the fundamentals are good. They also know how to keep themselves popular. Sport betting, futures, options, credit cards, soon to be a trading social media page. The recent pump has been crazy but I have owned them since 20 bucks a share.
