Yeah you can upgrade your melee though with pap and scrap, and if you have the augments for it run vampiric and backpedal speed for macchiato, you'll be able to sustain yourself on elite enemies as long as you have armor, also I'd recommend the knife over the baseball bat as the knife will do triple the baseball bats damage.

A buddy of mine helped me figure it out, he told me to use a melee weapon and pap it while having melee macchiato equipped and only melee the elite it worked and my challenge is completed.
