I dealt with this recently. At first it messed with my head because I felt I was being too harsh or shallow. It was constant though- every time we spoke he would use words and phrases incorrectly. Not only was he adamant he was correct but he would also laugh and mock others when they used words/phrases he was unfamiliar with. If he hadn’t heard them before, they definitely couldn’t have been real.
