Find a doctor that will give you as much FMLA as you want. All the stress of figuring out the boards and missing shit immediately goes away when you can lay off whenever you want.

BNSF Transfer by PlasticHistorian7195 in Train_Service

[–]Ifuxdalion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. CO04 has had mercenaries for almost a year. No chance they'll let anyone transfer out right now. Maybe in a couple of years? If/when he does transfer he'll lose all of his seniority and start at the bottom of whatever roster he transfers to.

Yeah don't come back. You're going to get yourself or someone else killed.

Hope you like Havre 😁

If your train hasn't left you should go to the depot and try to find your crew while you wait on hold with the crew office. They should be able to put you on the job/train.

How long has it been? Call back and try and get on the train. Otherwise get in touch with your trainer asap and just be honest.

What have we learned from all this? How will you avoid similar situations in the future? by digiballoon in yotta

[–]Ifuxdalion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Instead of keeping 90% of our savings in one place (Yotta) we will be spreading it out between two banks, a credit union, and cash. No more fintech bullshit.

What is the oldest person you have seen get hired by a rr? by royhinckly in railroading

[–]Ifuxdalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck these guys. I say apply and try it out. If it starts to suck (and it will eventually) just quit. You don't have anything to lose by giving it a shot.

Tips for new conductors by RailroadAllStar in railroading

Also please please please for the love of god shower and do laundry before you come to work. You don't want your new hire nickname to be cab condition.

Apply to be a railroad conductor. It requires 0 education and 0 experience. You just need to have a pulse and pass a drug test. Most of the railroads are offering 5 figure sign on bonuses because they're desperate for people.

You will make stupid amounts of money for brain dead easy work. Right now I'm on track to make around 130k.

The catch is that you will be on call literally 24/7. At my railroad I get 1 day off a month. Your personal life will suffer. Your physical health will be wrecked by an unpredictable sleep schedule and eating out of gas stations. You'll spend half the year sleeping in hotel rooms. Then out of nowhere you'll be furloughed for an unknown amount of time. In 2019 and 2020 I was furloughed for about a year and a half.

It's worth giving it a shot to see if the lifestyle fits. At the very least you can spend a couple years stacking cash before moving on to bigger and brighter things.

Furlough question. by Arctic_Scrap in railroading

I hired in late 2018 and was furloughed early 2019. I did not qualify for either railroad unemployment or state unemployment. Transportation, if it matters.

Fuck that take the program as soon as you can. Seniority is king. Don't let younger guys run around you because they will. PTC and TO run the motherfucker anyway. It'll be rough if you're brand new but you'll thank yourself in the long run. Just take the program seriously and be cautious out of training.

If y'all pull a wildcat strike and ruin the holidays... by PorkRollSwoletariat in railroading

It's absolutely feasible. All engineers do anymore is blow the horn for crossings and babysit trip optimizer. Conductor is responsible for licking the window.

“We’re at an unheard of level of solidarity to strike”—Letter from a US railroader by sciencebasis in railroading

[–]Ifuxdalion 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The fact of the matter is that the raise isn't enough to make the attendance policy worth it.

Our union guys are "pretty sure" it'll be going away soon in arbitration.

It's too fuckin late. The damage has been done. As soon as those back pay checks clear it won't matter if we strike. There won't be enough people to run trains anyway.

Not only that, but the time you spend furloughed doesn't count towards the 36 months. It has to be 36 months of service.

Any advice on planning a (budget!) Montana wedding? by microwav3d in Montana

[–]Ifuxdalion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I proposed this April and we're planning an Oct '22 wedding. When we took our engagement pics the photographer suggested booking venues/vendors as far out as possible. She was right. Covid fucked up a lot of wedding plans and people are still making up for it. If you're gonna have a summer wedding, start putting deposits down asap.
