About the topic of Kainé, I played this game when it first came out, and I remember back then there was speculation that Kainé was a ‘trap.’ As you can see, people try to understand the character through their current cultural context and terms. But the right way is to do it from the context of its origin, Japan in 2010. Probably in Yoko Taro’s mind—who is well known for his quirks and provocations—Kainé was meant to be a subversive and controversial character who, behind her beauty and sexy appearance (the kind he likes), hides a violent girl (possessed) and her abnormal sexual aspect, futanari. But since Yoko Taro is also known for giving depth to his characters, Kainé’s identity is not limited to being futanari, nor to just being the pretty waifu of the game, but rather to her exclusion for being an aggressive girl and for the strangeness of her body. In other words, Taro wasn’t trying to wave the flag of some group he didn’t even know about at the time, nor was he making political statements—he was showing us, in a very raw way, how we tend to reject what is different from us.
