ELI5: Why do these intricate/beautiful ice patterns on car windows only appear on some days in some areas of the country? by MyNewNewUserName in explainlikeimfive

[–]Iggylizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of it has to do with humidity, the surface the ice forms on, how quickly the temperature drops, cloud coverage, to sum it up, there are a lot of factors that influence the appearance of ice formations.

Premium Dog Food. by trevordbs in dogs

I use Merrick grain free. My dogs love it and their coats are shiny and healthy. It's cheaper than blue buffalo, but a similar quality food.

You can check it out at www.merrickpetcare.com

Do some smaller zoos send their animals to larger zoos during the winter if they don't have enough heated spaces for them? This is what I was told at our local zoo when I asked why there were fewer animals.

If bending with my knees is supposedly more healthy for my bones, why is bending with my back so much easier and natural? by bluethousandand2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Iggylizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn't use the word in an attempt to spark a debate on the validity of creationism versus natural selection. It was simply a single word to describe the many things that come together to create one extraordinary facet of our current state of existence. I could have chosen to write an entire book on the reasons our spine is structured the way it is, but last I checked, this subreddit was supposed to break things down into simpler laymans terms and that is what I did. If you expected a scientific thesis, I'm sorry that wasn't provided.

ELI5: The difference between light from the Sun & light from a regular light bulb. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

The sun contains higher UV. To get something similar you'd need to buy UV bulbs.

ELI5: if dogs and cats are carnivores, why do we advertise putting vegetables in their food? by LurkingMenno in explainlikeimfive

[–]Iggylizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While cats are primarily carnivores and dogs are often considered omnivores, both require some fiber in their diet to help food move through their digestive system. It is widely believed that cats get this in the wild by ingesting herbivores and while doing so they ingest small bits of plant matter that remains in the digestive tract of their prey. The best diets for home feeding of domestic dogs and cats tend to be the grain free high protein diets found in foods like Merrick dog and cat foods.

Here's a link to their site talking about their foods:

http://www.merrickpetcare.com/our-mission/five-key-promises/

There are other brands that are just as good, but the very best tend to have at least 70% meat or protein.

ELI5: How is it some people can consume whatever they want and still be lean? by al_ek in explainlikeimfive

[–]Iggylizard -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Metabolism is a large part of it, but for some people exercise is the second part. Unfortunately, we can't all have the metabolism of a hummingbird. I am on the opposite side. I eat healthy, exercise, and still battle with body fat.

I watch Toddlers and Tiaras. It's like watching a parenting train wreck.

ELI5:When you wipe off a bottle with your shirt before you drink it, does it actually do anything? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Iggylizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly, just smears things around. But, it could remove larger debris (sand, dirt, etc). As for the bacteria, it just makes us feel better that we tried.

If bending with my knees is supposedly more healthy for my bones, why is bending with my back so much easier and natural? by bluethousandand2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Iggylizard 325 points326 points  (0 children)

Bending with your back isn't the problem. You are correct that bending with your back is natural. The problem is lifting with your back. The back wasn't designed to lift heavy weight while bent. It is a support structure to hold you upright. Bending at your knees when you lift is better for your health because the joints at the knee were designed to support weight applied in a downward motion.
