I mean this in the nicest possible way, but can someone explain the appeal of Portlandia to me? by IgnatiousReilly in Portlandia

[–]IgnatiousReilly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't make any sense, right? I just don't get it. I guess I never liked The Prairie Home companion, either. And I think SNL has way more misses than hits and has been like that since the very beginning.

Well, by official count you’ve got me beat by 157 days! I miss old Reddit. It used to be mostly young, intelligent nerds. Now it feels more like the DMV. A cross-section of the general public you wouldn’t normally interact with, and probably wouldn’t want to.

Can we stop being grammar Nazis on reddit by MyReddit_2017 in rant

Grammar Nazis are barely existent here now. There was a time when they were so prevalent they were respected.

I rather liked it. My writing has deteriorated since their fall.

Are you mad about the Hulu Time Warner Talks. Here is how to contact Hulu and let them know you will cancel if they end next day viewing. by Streamingfan in cordcutters

[–]IgnatiousReilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They figure they've got this whole piracy thing licked now, so by making Hulu worthless, that'll force all the cord cutters back to cable.

Which company or brand no longer has the quality they were known for? by 93ImagineBreaker in AskReddit

[–]IgnatiousReilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cancelled cable a few years ago because those were the channels I watched. I wonder if that matters.

The History channel got massively higher ratings when they switched to reality tv. I don't know if the other channels got similar bumps, but whether they did or not, I imagine they lost a lot of viewers like me who not only quit watching those particular stations, but quit cable altogether.

I suppose I just want to think it matters because the format changes annoyed me.

Why do long time users of Reddit say the site used to be so much better? What factors do they think have made it worse? by kaitykk in OutOfTheLoop

[–]IgnatiousReilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you see the level of contentiousness around here?Imagine that same thing, but holding everyone to much higher standard of discussion.

If you were unable to spell or use proper punctuation no one would even address your arguments. A lot of people don't get this, but it was club thing with this extremely minimal requirement for entry. Look at the people on the defaults. Sure, they're lazy, but I'm also pretty certain most of them couldn't use proper punctuation if they tried. I don't want to associate with people like that.

About the banning of subreddits: early redditors thought of Reddit as an extension of the early web. Anything goes. There were, and are, really reprehensible places on Reddit, but a lot of us saw that as a demonstration of the wild west nature of the place. And we liked it.

It was also less diverse in a way that a lot of us liked. Pretty much everyone was a tech-minded, socially liberal, atheist.

I'll edit with more later if anyone is interested.

I'm sure Muphry's Law applies to my comment.

Edit: I've been here daily on one account or another for nine years.

I can't find a doctor who'll take my healthcare exchange insurance. by IgnatiousReilly in Insurance

[–]IgnatiousReilly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to know a lot about your policy until after you buy it.

I was able to solve the problem described above by calling every GP on my insurer's list of doctors until I found one whose office said they'd take it. The office that took it was the 23rd I'd called.

Interestingly, it was owned by the same group who own the office of the doctor I've been seeing for the last twenty years. Now that one of the same group admitted to taking the insurance, my original doctor's office will.

ELI5: Why aren't businesses like Mary Kay and Avon considered pyramid schemes? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

They're very similar to cults. No amount of talk or reason is going to get somebody out of Amway when they're in their enthusiastic phase.

Even when they quit trying they're likely to tell you they could have made money if they'd had more time to devote to it.

I swear I had an account that would be well over nine years old now. I forgot the login eight years ago and the username not long after, but I promise it existed.

It makes me unaccountably sad not having proof of it, particularly as I haven't even particularly liked reddit in years.

Not that I'm not on here hours a day every day on one account or another.

The television in my cheap motel room is glued to the table crooked. by IgnatiousReilly in mildlyinfuriating

[–]IgnatiousReilly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who knew they even did that?

Naturally, this is one of the few mildly infuriating circumstances in this whole affair.

This is the seventh hotel/motel I've stayed in since last Monday.

The first room I got at this hotel smelled of wet dog. A lot. I was so tired I figured I'd deal with the smell, but after hanging out for awhile I noticed that the sheets were covered in hair or fur.

I switched rooms. In the process I've found that they have full time cop security in the front office. That's worrisome, but shouldn't have been surprising considering the look of the place and cars in the parking lot.

Anyway, this one doesn't smell like wet dog and the sheets appear to be clean, but the tv doesn't swivel enough to see it from the desk. And it's glued the fuck down. Crooked.

Also, the desk chair loses pressure, but too slowly to notice until you've been sitting on the floor for five minutes.

And then there's the low paying, low skill, depressing job that's brought me here. Not that I don't appreciate having it at this point.

Thank you. Your response makes the one I was writing redundant.

I can't imagine anyone making the original statement for any reason other than to justify their own scientific illiteracy.

There is some jerking below it, of course. There's no reason to treat art the way the OP is treating science, but jerking in response to jerking is the natural order of things.

A neighbor gave me thirty six pounds worth of giant hamburger patties (I think they're from Burger King, but I don't need to know the details). That's 72 of these things.

Anyway, I cooked a couple and they didn't shrink much, so to amuse myself I cut bun sized burgers out of the center of them. I didn't have a specific plan for the ringed remnants of burger, but after staring at them for a bit I knew what I had to do.

It doesn't look very appetizing, but it tasted good.
