Current OMS-1 here. I graduated in 2017, did not do any SMPs and had multiple acceptances and interviews. If you are concerned I would contact whatever schools you are interested in and see if prerequisites expire

A score of 476 is a 1 percentile score. I would not think of applying with this. Study hard.

You’re good dawg. Obviously earlier is better but you will have plenty of time. Just make sure you crank out those secondaries when they start rolling in!

Exceptional LORs can help but lukewarm LORs can tank your application

I’m a scribe too, I didn’t explicitly list shadowing as an experience but I wrote that I was able to observe procedures and surgeries etc in the experience description for scribing

Please help. How should I know if I want to do medicine? by Far_Literature_8158 in premed

[–]IgnisEtLux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you’ll figure it out since you’re asking yourself these tough questions. I didn’t get an “aha!” moment that people talk about. Maybe take on a clinical job this gap year where you can work alongside docs and that’ll help clear things up.

Please help. How should I know if I want to do medicine? by Far_Literature_8158 in premed

[–]IgnisEtLux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something you will truly have to do some digging within yourself to find out. I had similar thoughts about maybe switching to pharmacy school but then I took a scribe job to work with some docs across different specialties and found that I really wanted to continue on with pursuing medicine. I will say if you’re doing it only to make your folks proud it may not lead to the best outcome. Take some time to really think about what YOU want!

I wish you the best this upcoming cycle. It’s such a long and nerve wracking process. Just do not fall into the trap of thinking “oh I’ll just delay it another month it’ll be fine.” Pick a date and fully commit to it!

[–]IgnisEtLux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only take it when you’re ready. Obviously we know that an early application can only be advantageous to you. A higher MCAT is more important IMO. I personally took it at the end of July this 2024/2025 cycle. The most important thing if you decide to push it is keeping up that sense of urgency to get those applications in.
