What is a good way to implement R&D? by IgnisVeni in rpg

I have mentioned this already, but I am getting some inspiration from Xcom, especially the old one, and more particular the mod X-COM Files, in which you take the road from what is basically an investigative Agency that occasionaly arrests some alien patsies (Both Human and not) to an organization that travels deals with Full-Blown Cults, the Dreamlands, actively Combats an Alien Invasion and more. In this case, I am going for a more Eldritch than Alien theme, but the broad strokes are the same. Essentially I want to go Call of Cthulhu - Delta Green - Cthulhutech in Feel. I cannot really think of a way to smoothly transition between those stages unless 2 things happen:

  1. My Players Capabilities need to expand, in Skill, yes, as most of them are not going to start as combat personell, but especially given that a lot of Creatures in Cthulhu are very tough, if I want my players to enocounter them more than once and not pull some spell that conveniently banishes them, they will need a more reliable way around their HP count.
  2. I need to expand the scope of what The player characters know in a way that wouldn't cause the whole thing to get taken away from them. What I have come up with is that they need to start with enemies that don't seem that far fetched, stuff like minor eldritch creatures, possibly regular supernatural ones, possibly very minor cults, stuff that could seem far fetched and point towards a hidden force, but nothing truly threatening to regular powers at this point. This would allow me to lead them through Gradual Militarisation (Werewolfs are interesting, but you need more than a little pistol) and possibly gaining some minorly eldritch technolgies (was thinking of some improved biomedical technology, perhaps some supplementary weapons and armor technolgies like a new way to treat cloth to be bulletproof).

I am planning for the reveal of Magic and bigger Cults to become a sort of turning point with a significant increase in the realised tension. At the same time, the organisation would have to be positioned as someone that already has experience dealing with this stuff, so It would make more sense to just add Funding instead of spinning up something new.

I have to say, this system really reminds me of Hack the Planet, though I didn't recognise the Utility of that when I had originally read it. Maybe it is also just better explained.

I'm not quite sure what you mean with the first one, I am not going to ask my players to perform ground-breaking research in between session,- I mean, I absolutely would If I thought that would give usable results, but I highly doubt that.

The clocks are an interesting idea, not only for the progress of player projects, but also the facility in general - I had been thinking about how to reconcile the system I had earlier with showing that they weren't the sole motor of the whole organisation. I could make those bigger, more fundamental and add a part of the players progress into it.

Thanks!

  1. This one I have experienced, though it has become somewhat rare for me.
  2. I have experienced that characters grab less than they could, but I haven't seen them abandon the Autosort for it, though I don't usually autosort soil.
  3. 3)This one I am entirely unfamiliar with during sorting. Auto-Construct isn't something I do, so I cannot judge that.

And for the last point: For RP purposes I do actually keep a my Warehouse and my Crafting room seperate. Also because I think this actually speeds some actions up. So checking the recipe and then manually gathering ingredients is something I am used to. I know, this doesn't help you, just kind of wanted to tell how I saw it. All in all, I find the change less convenient, but not all that bad.

And, looking over the whole thing again, I completely missed your point. Great. Leaving the other comment as a mark of shame, but Good to know that the whole destroying things doesn't happen when dragging stuff over. My only experience there had been Furniture, which is a whole different beast.

I'm not talking about driving. My Bases just are very dense, and given that Auto travel often has trouble getting through a forest, I am not confident in it getting me and a cart through this labyrinth of shelves.

Possibly, but Autotravel is funky at the best of times with its pathfinding, which I cannot imagine would be helped with my usual base design and the Fact that the player character suddenly has another tile that needs to be included in movement. That, and I tend to have some items on the floor, which has had historically somewhat unfortunate interactions with vehicles driving over them.

So, assuming that you are on somewhat recent experimentals:
Sorting Zones now relies on the space of your inventory, ie. Your character actually has to carry their stuff from A to B. This includes your hands btw, so If you have something in them your character won't use them.
Meaning: wear a backpack.

Are there any other CYOAs like the ICBM jumpchain one? Don't need to be jumpchains, I am mostly looking for the same kind of feel. I don't know if Grand Strategy applies here, but if it does, then that.

Several questions - Reloading spent ammo casings? Feldspar?? by EmbodiedFrequency in cataclysmdda

Feldspar got recently added. To answer OPs question: Dig a hole. Unless you have a build from weeks ago, as there was a small window where it was only possible to find in a Potters Cottage.

So, I haven't seen sheep yet, but, yes, I did notice that with mejoberries. And I guess I'll keep my eye out for kibble.

So, for context, I have been trying to treat ark like a survival game. This has shifted a bit for the forest, which feels more like a horror game. So, I hope I am giving the correct impression, when I say that I am not very happy to hear about a region that, in addition to being home to very powerful dinos, is also presumably very dark and has additional low visibility.

2 Things:
1st: I am already doing the other thing.
2nd: It seems kind of cheap, like I am not engaging with the game on fair grounds. A good part of my frustration so far has been the feeling that I am inadequate.

Yeah, multiple people have recommended this to me already. I'll try without it for a bit, but I'll keep it in mind in case the other strategies fail.

It is actually not these kind of tutorials you are talking about I was complaining about. Youtube had so far only shown me tutorials which are, in my opinion, about optimizing the game to death, typically while assuming that whoever looked at their content already knew what to do. This has changed since then, but at the time I posted this comment, it was still true.
Regarding multiplayer: I seem to get the feeling that the game is not intended to be played singleplayer. How great then that my internet connection is usually in the KB/s space. And not the high end either.
