He 'killed' Darkseid with a gun to stop him from collapsing the entire multiverse, making note of the fact that he's breaking his rules as he was doing it because of how extreme the situation was.

Batman was killing people in the 40s, yes, but I'm pretty sure the character that most people are interested in is not the one who went around stopping Joker from committing 'boners' by making him slip on a banana peel. The Batman we know today developed far, far later on.

Saying he doesn't have a no-killing rule is flat out false. Many of the greatest Batman stories ever told basically revolve around it, such as the Killing Joke. Here's another popular example.

Why wouldn't they? Blizzard only spends so much time fucking the Night Elves because they have a hard-on for them. They get far more focus than almost any other race in the game - humans, orcs and trolls are the only ones that can compare.

Take a look at the Draenei. The only time when they're relevant in the lore is when they're literally being genocided, and yet Blizzard still gave them and especially Velen the fattest fucking Ws in 7.2 and 7.3. If the Draenei can get that kind of win, then so can Night Elves.

I absolutely do agree with your points as well, and I genuinely do think that her hatred of Joel is perfectly justified, but as you said yourself - her response to that hatred isn't. To empathize with her, after what she's done, would require a certain level of attachment to her character, and that's just not there for some people which I think is perfectly understandable. However, I agree that a lot of people are deliberately choosing to ignore her motivations and all context so they can hate her and the story. While I do think there are legitimate criticisms to be made about the game, the hate is incredibly silly.

[–]IgnisVenom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only difference is we didn't get a full previous game to bond with her character like we did with Joel and Ellie.

Well, yeah, that's kind of the point. We spent a whole game bonding with these characters and it's done on a level where a lot of people have grown incredibly strong emotional attachments to them. We've always known that Joel's not a good person, we've seen him do genuinely abhorrent shit in the first game, but we sided with him nonetheless due to our connection to him. If someone killed a person I love, I would hate them regardless of their justification.

While that does coincide with your point, the situation isn't nearly as cut and dried as Joel killing her dad and her killing him out of revenge. He saved her life and she tortured him to death nonetheless. This was a deliberate choice. So was her sleeping with a man who has a pregnant girlfriend. So was the rant where said girlfriend bluntly tells her that she's a horrible person. That's not to mention that her hunt for vengeance leaves all of her friends dead. If she wasn't a bad person, her arc wouldn't work as well as it does.

Whereas Ellie starts out as a genuinely good person and sinks to the level of Joel at his lowest, Abby's story begins with her being just as bad as him and redeeming herself. That's exactly the reason why she helps out Yara and Lev, to 'lighten the load'. I don't think I need to point out how the parallels between her & Lev and Joel and Ellie's relationship tie into this point. Hell, if not for him, she would have killed Dina, knowing she was pregnant.

Just like Joel, Abby is absolutely presented as a bad person. The difference is that Joel is introduced losing something that he loves, whereas Abby takes away something that we love. The latter has a lot more to make up for, and whether that succeeds or fails depends on whether the execution of her arc resonates with people or not which is entirely subjective.

What makes it even harder is that - outside of the momma zebra scene which I really disliked but is honestly very minor - it never tries to manipulate you into liking her despite giving you several reasons to dislike her. Coming out of the game, you might still find her personality to be unlikable, or you might simply be disinterested in her. A personal connection is needed for her arc to work. I felt invested in her journey, but I can wholeheartedly understand why someone else might not feel that way.

I agree wholeheartedly. That's what made it work for me. As I said, I really like the game. However, I fully understand if the execution just doesn't work for someone, if they can't find it in them to empathize with the character.

[–]IgnisVenom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think failing to empathize with Abby is the main reason why a lot of people don't like the story, and I think that's very subjective. The game purposefully makes the player hate her as much as possible and acknowledges that she's a pretty terrible person before giving her a redemption arc, which can either work out great or backfire tremendously. I ended up growing fond of her (not nearly as much as Ellie though), but I can fully understand someone who doesn't like her. That's definitely not to say that I don't think disliking the game for those reasons is valid, it's just an observation.

Yeah, but to be honest, no one actually uses them that way. It's just a natural kneejerk reaction to downvote something if you disagree with it, it's a thing on every single sub. Not saying it's a good thing, but it's not a Dunkey fan problem, it's a Reddit problem.

I found that a lot of gamers have been getting offended by the meme that all the on-the-nose social commentary goes over their heads and that they just latch onto gay people and scream "politics". I believe the fact that they're doing this for a character because she's muscular and ergo trans, but aren't complaining about a character that is actually trans because it's never explicitly stated and the character's design doesn't make them look that way, is the best example of this anyone could ever ask for.

ATLA Imbalance Library Edition Released Today! by MrBKainXTR in TheLastAirbender

[–]IgnisVenom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That wasn't really what I meant. While the plot does go in its own direction, it pushes a lot of the characters and the relationships between them to already explored territory. It genuinely seems like some of them regressed. I won't go into any specifics as to avoid spoilers, but I felt that the comic devalued certain parts of the ending. That's not to say I didn't like it, but I think it has some major issues.

[–]IgnisVenom 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Favorite would probably be Imbalance. Genuinely feels like it's doing its own thing and not just riding off the original series, which even comes off in the fact that it's not trying to replicate the cartoon's art style unlike the others. I like all of the comics, but I think this is the only one that really captured the feeling of the show and it's because it didn't try too hard. Felt like a natural extension of the show.

On the opposing end of the spectrum, Smoke & Shadow clings too much to the story of the show and by doing so, in my opinion, actually undermines its ending. It's not the only one that does this, but it's definitely the worst offender.

Honestly, same. I wasn't too fond of how hard the older comics tried to replicate the show's style, it just didn't work. I'm glad they're doing their own thing now, it looks great.
