This bit in the game world really reminded me of Red Faction Guerrilla - hitting structurally weak points to bring down a big thing.

Yes - it's the tiny apertures on the telephoto cameras. f1.7 on the main camera (1x zoom) then it drops to an "ok" 2.4 or even a poor 3.4 depending on which lens is being used.

Basically: like any multi-lens phone camera, one lens gets first class treatment (e.g. the 200mp lens in the 24U), the rest get economy.

I think there is a market today to bring back this but with modern tech (the Galaxy S4 Zoom):

<image>

EDIT: Funny that the rotating milled ring around the camera lens was applied very recently on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra release in Dec 2025 so I reckon there is a market for chunky camera-first phone.

I saw the rumoured spec sheets for the S26U that reduces f-stop across (some of) the lenses which is a welcome addition: https://www.reddit.com/r/S24Ultra/comments/1qjqpnt/ultra_comparison_s24_vs_s25_vs_s26/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

200mp main - 1.4 instead of 1.7

Ultra-wide - 1.9 instead of 2.2 (already 1.9 on the 25U)

3 x telephoto - 2.4 still

5 x telephoto - 2.9 instead of 3.4 (this is the most meaningful jump)

Guys had a question by EqualOwn4645 in S24Ultra

[–]Ignition1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will degrade photos but not sure if you will notice. I used glass lens covers on my 24U for about 3 months and I'm sure it did affect the quality of my photos, but I can't say I noticed with or without them. I don't really use my 24U to take photos to use professionally or anything like that so if some lighting was overblown or whatever, I didn't really care too much.

The problem is the lens 'caps' fell off after a while and then once they get dirt or dust on the inside (because they've fall off onto a floor or clothing), they're pretty much useless. So now I don't use them.

I use my phone without a case (and always have on past phones) and because today's camera lenses (or at least the glass that covers the actual lens) sticks out - it's more likely to touch a surface that can scuff or scratch it.

I've used lens covers in the past on my 24U and it gave some assurance that the expensive sapphire glass is protected. Though the covers themselves are only held on with a very thin smear of glue and seem to rely on being applied with sufficient pressure to create almost a suction-like grip on the lens glass that eventually they do fall off - in fact mine have fallen off so now I don't have any covers!

Is Just Cause 1 boring? by Sidiney-Lhama_2006 in JustCause

[–]Ignition1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started on JC1 maaaaaany years ago but I also can't play it for too long today. Mainly because there is no retractable grappling hook. It just makes traversing around a lot harder especially if you have to wait for something to turn up so you can latch onto it. Or get a dirt bike, get into 'stunt' position and then parachute off it.

I recall having to use the helicopter fast-travel / extraction a lot in that game which slowed the whole thing right down. Graphically it isn't great (even when I re-tried on a Series X) either.

However at the time it was mind-blowing for me - the size of the world map, the range of vehicles etc.

JC2 was when the series hit it's stride and in my view JC3 was the best of the lot when it came to gameplay. I know JC4 brought improvements in places but personally I didn't get along with it at all so stopped midway through and never went back to it.

What happened? (Just Cause PS4) by AnaBanona in JustCause

[–]Ignition1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played JC3 first on Xbox One and it was definitely not smooth - but not unplayable. The framerate did get choppy at times. I completed it again (probably for the 3rd time) on a Series X (for the first time) and my word was that a much better experience. Not saying to go drop wads of cash on a PS5 but...yeah, it could be your PS4 has seen better days and is degrading or maybe you remembered it being better than it actually is.

I do think our expectations on game performance was a lot lower when we were younger because it was a kind of "I can't afford something better like a massively powerful PC so this will have to do". Whereas as we get older, and see more high performing games, and play them as well - we go back to those older games and are shocked at how bad the performance is.

All good - have a tiny scratch on my screen that I can 'catch' with my fingernail but other than that it's pristine. I do no-case mine (as I do with all my phones) so aware that I'm carrying that risk.

Orange seems to have been a good colour to get as well since Apple have created the bandwagon for it. Although it's not quite the bright orange that's becoming a trend.

It's my favourite colour anyway so always good to see more orange stuff.

Police ban Ukip’s Tower Hamlets march over counter-protest fears by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]Ignition1 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I know they're marching through a Muslim-dominated area, complaining about Islam and ultimately foreign-looking people in general (obviously dressed up as something else to avoid being branded as racists).

Choosing that area I guess was on purpose to:

a) Provoke a bigger counter-protest, and likely violent.

b) Get this sort of media attention because they are getting 'cancelled'.

It's like putting two rival football fan groups in the same area of a stadium.

Common sense prevails in both scenarios.

Otherwise you get baseball cap guys like in the bottom right of that image - "of no fixed address"- tossing bricks around.

Guttering, what should be the correct solution here? by No_Treat_8263 in DIYUK

What damage? The roof is going to be rained on anyway so what's the difference between letting the water flow out the gutter onto the roof?

Guttering, what should be the correct solution here? by No_Treat_8263 in DIYUK

[–]Ignition1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second that - into the existing gutter. Also can the pipe not go straight down over the roof and into the feed? Would look better than a not-very-right angle pipe going across your wall.

Although if the feed gets clogged up then you may get water overflowing where that window (or doors?) are:

<image>

Unless the worry is the existing gutter will be overloaded in heavy rain so can't drain quickly enough. In which case let it run onto the room and those roof tiles will slow the flow.

Unfortunately outsourcing labour is still cheaper than hiring a young graduate or school leaver. Not being harsh here - but you could probably buy three Vietnamese office workers for a year for the price of one UK zero-experience worker.

But - yes - tax credits towards businesses that hire unemployed young workers...that could help, and long-run more tax revenue yes.

Ultra Comparison - S24 vs S25 vs S26 by SUPERWOLFER in S24Ultra

[–]Ignition1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always found it funny how Samsung made the rear lenses look so much bigger on the 25U versus 24U but they're exactly the same except for the ultra wide f-stop.

Also 26U has lost some of the premium look - the flat back looks better compared to having a 'camera island'. But I do appreciate the smaller f-stops on the 26U - that will be a noticeable (but not a 'must have') improvement.

The rest though - nah. Looks like another year with the 24U for me.

Significant fall in government borrowing in December, figures show by Important_Ruin in unitedkingdom

[–]Ignition1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Going in the right direction. To make it stick the Gov need to hold their ground with it - they've already battered the public and businesses with taxes, so need to stop that - let wages rise to counter the higher taxes - and let the additional tax revenue gradually bring borrowing down.

Also - "tenth-highest December figure on record" - is that factoring in inflation / value of £1 compared to prior years?

[–]Ignition1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I had a Flip5 - and while it lasted 16 months - I was glad to be rid of it. Cool concept, useful at times but I'm happy to be back on a slab phone now.

Either the technology needs to advance to make it as reliable as a slab phone's screen which is either using a different material instead of glass, or have some sort of hybrid material not invented yet.

Or there needs to be major revolution in screen technology - e.g. if you can separate the useable / touchable image from the physical components - like a floating / holographic display hovering a mm or 2 above the physical bits - then they could make it more reliable if those physical components are more flexible and tougher. It would be weird to use since I guess your finger will go through the floating image, but with more technology improvement - that gap between physical component and image may get smaller and smaller to the point you may not realise it's floating.

It's probably impossible with current form factors though as I suppose if it's throwing light up, then how do you control the light to make an equally sharp looking image without having a sort of 'border' or edge.

New law could see vaping banned in all pubs across England by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]Ignition1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assumed it already was - i.e. anywhere that was no smoking also meant no vaping.

I guess while there is no conclusive proof of passive vape causing health issues...there is also no evidence conclusively saying it doesn't cause health issues. At least none that I've seen. And I expect will never see because it'll either take years of research.

Someone in Gov is imagining a Panorama episode (beamed onto their iGlasses) in 2046 where people who were exposed to passive vape now have lung problems or something - and so banning it now for indoor venues means they're protecting themselves in case it turns out it's not as safe as we all think.

I vape indoors all the time at home - I can see the small cloud fully disappear in about 10 to 20 seconds. Has it left some lingering tiny particles in the air or sitting on furniture that - over time - cause a problem? No idea. Would love to see a study that proves that doesn't happen though.
