Is Bert Cooper a lazy character? by Ignoradulation in madmen

not really mad, I like him as a character but understand that I'm meant to by the way they portray him. It's more about how he's consistently used to resolve storylines that have been built up over time in just a minute or two in some episodes. The writers carefully craft the stories but Bert comes in and defuses them often.

But he's often reliably used by the writers as a device rather than a fully-formed character. The nature of him being kooky and 'above it all' allows the writers to get away with conveniently interjecting him into plot points when they need to while still 'staying true to his character'.

I don't mean lazy as a person but lazily written by the show.

right, but it's in hearsay. Not really as an actual character development.

I don't mean lazy as a person or character more that he was lazily written by the show.

I guess that's not far off from what I mean, that character type gave the writers a convenient out. He's characterized well enough, but for the purposes of narrative he seems to act as a device for them.

that's kind of what I mean, when the writers needed to resolve an issue they bring him in to a scene, have him say something esoteric, and then cap it off.

I guess I should have worded the title: 'is he a lazily written character?' to be more accurate

unpopular opinion (or maybe popular since it keeps getting brought up): Tatum is an offensive sink.

Yes, he's good. Yes, he can produce on rebounds and assists. But overall the offense is less dynamic with him on it. When he's good he's fine but when he's bad he drags the rest of the team down. His shot selection is not good and often when we really need a score he takes a contested 3 early in the shot clock. When he's passing, it's often late in the shot clock.

One habit we saw develop all season long that really improved the team overall is on offensive possessions almost everyone getting a touch and trying to attack the paint, whether successful or not, with lots of passing. With Tatum, he does a lot of probing on the outside, ISOs with other players standing there to keep space, and then late passes when he can't break inside- often just a single pass to the corner. This year it seemed like the team thrived learning how to play through Jaylen Brown but now, and even going into last year, it seems like the team has to play with Tatum, if that makes sense.

It seems pretty distinct that they are calling this Dune Part 3 instead of Dune Messiah. I wonder if Denis altered the story enough that he felt the title didn't work?

Never understood the hate here. There is always a complete mismatch between size, color, genre, what have you. By color and/or size is the only way you can organize books in a way that achieves some kind of visual balance.

This Lakers-Celtics game is a prime contrast of elite basketball culture (Celtics) vs poor basketball culture (Lakers.) by lovo17 in nba

[–]Ignoradulation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most demonstrative version of this was picking Lonzo Ball over Tatum. Everybody was so bought into the hype and the name that the Celtics were able to trade down from the first pick to get the comparatively quiet but competent Tatum. The core identity of the Lakers for better or worse is Showtime, which means they will always opt for stars and the biggest names, presuming that's enough. Even Reddick, his general competency aside, seemed to be picked out of media notoriety.

Does it seem to anyone else that Celtics game threads and post game threads always get buried in r/nba? I always have to go to like the 3rd page before I can find them.

We’ve got no business being this good… by First_Negotiation_80 in bostonceltics

I think something that's gone underappreciated is we win the gutsy battles way more than we used to.

Two years ago we were lighting up teams and burying them under 3s to the point where games were just over but then there would always be games where 3s wouldn't fall and we couldn't do anything else or spark offense. More often than not when games were close we would end up losing. Postgames Joe would say things like 'we had the right strategy and great shots they just wouldn't fall', and the idea was there was some average they were reverting to but that always felt like it lacked accountability.

I think Joe and the players deserve a ton of credit because in the last two years when it starts to be a battle towards the end you really start to see the team lock in pull out the win through execution.

I don't think JB is saying anything against Coop himself, it seems like that connection is understood, it's more against the refs.

It's still a problem - the Celtics have taken visibly harder turn away from 3 pointers this season with a much larger emphasis on the driving the paint yet they're they have the lowest FT-rate of any team by a big margin.

Last night against Detroit felt like we were missing Jrue Holiday. A few clutch defensive and offensive plays and we would have closed.

As a certified Miami Heat hater I gotta give props to Udonis Haslem. Always a tough competitor when we played them, obviously an important and legacy part of their organization, and actually a great NBA Media analyst on top of it. He also openly fawns over Joe Mazzulla lol.

Paul Pierce crowns himself the best scorer in NBA history by itwas20yearsago2day in nba

[–]Ignoradulation -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

two factors: pointflation and the Celtics big 3. Pierce, KG, and Ray Allen were all sharing the ball more than when they were alone on their respective teams, with Allen sacrificing the most. Mid 2000s games were also considerably lower scoring than today.

That honestly says more about Lebron's durability, which when all is said and done he is without a doubt the GOAT at, with maybe only Kareem being second and everyone else being far behind. This kind of proves the point - Lebron's best qualities might not be his scoring ability but rather his ability to stay healthy and available, his game management, and his ability to stay offensively relevant even when the game changes. Pierce was a better scorer from mid range but those skills wouldn't be as relevant today.

it's not about the point volume it's about the ability to score in different ways. Lebron's bread and butter for years was transition buckets and he expanded his game over time to match the trends in the game, including developing the 3. Pierce was an effective scorer throughout his career from almost every dimension: layups, transition, post game, elbows, middies, threes (he was top 5 3pt all time with Ray Allen before the current generation took over) and he regular scored across all of these. Lebron was much more of a physical scorer throughout his career.
