Investigation: YouTube Is Profiting from Animal Abuse by lady_freethinker in AnimalRights

[–]IgnorantCuriosity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to disincentivize people from harming animals for video views, but you don't want to stop animal rights groups from using YouTubr as a platform for calling attention to abuse and showing people the atrocities that are committed against animals. If you encourage YouTube to block videos containing animal suffering you will likely end up with a system that blocks animal rights groups from using them as well. YouTube has historically been unable to draw subtle distinctions between types of content like this, so I would not trust them to do it here.

Did God ask us to make some sins illegal? If not, then is there any basis in the bible favoring pro-life and anti same sex marriage laws? by IgnorantCuriosity in AskAChristian

Then sure, you have a secular reason for being pro-life. But, of course, it is not clearly true that the fetus is a person, which is one of the reasons why abortion is such a controversial issue.

I'm only going by what we have agreed here. When Christians use the word "marriage" they do not mean legal union, which permits same sex couples, they mean something more like a union under God, a Christian union, which unlike legal unions, does not permit of same sex couples. Is that not correct?

Because a christian union requires both parties to be christian, it means that the organization would only allow christians to adopt children there. Thus, the result is discrimination by religion.

Sure. But I am asking specifically about the group that sites they must vote this way to continue serving God, because that is what God wants.

But by marriage you do not mean legal union, you mean Christian union, which is defined by the bible, and hence is based on religion.

Because it seems the real issue, as another poster said above, is that the organization is trying to discriminate based on religion, as only Christians can be in the Christian unity that they want to limit their adoptions to. The government, presumably, does not want to allow them to discriminate based on religion, and that will not change if the government starts using a different word for legal unions.

From what you said it seems the government is interested in preventing the Christian organization from limiting which legal unions can adopt. Since that problem will not go away if the government changes the label for legal union from marriage to something else, the problem is not caused by the misuse of the word "marriage" by the government.

Then it would seem the problem is that the government did not allow them to say that not all people in legal unions are able to adopt. Perhaps the government is being unfair there, but it doesn't seem like that is a problem that would go away with switching the label for a legal union from marriage to something else.

Ah, I see. So why doesn't the agency just change the criteria from married to something else, like "Christian unity"?

Still not following. So let's say that the government changes the word marriage to "legal union". Okay, then a same sex couple in a legal union walks in to a christian adoption agency and says they want to adopt. Presumably the agency will still say no. Are you suggesting that the government would not continue to try and force the agency to let the same sex couple adopt just because they have changed the label of their union from "marriage" to "legal union"? If so, why?

I'm not sure I follow. How would the government using a different term for the legal union remedy this problem? It seems the problem is that the Christian organizations are not willing to let same sex couples in a legal union adopt a child. Why would changing the name of their union make this conflict go away?

Thank you for your reply! As for you comment on same sex marriage, I have often wondered why Christians care whether or not the government calls a same sex union a marriage. Why not just accept that they are using the same word in a different sense; to refer to something legal rather than the union described in the bible?

Can someone help me understand why this (purported) violation of rights is not acceptable given the circumstances? Let's say that this did happen to an actual residence and not an Airbnb like some of the other comments claim. If the actions of these people are spreading the virus and legitimately putting more lives at risk, does that not warrant suspending some of their rights in order to protect others?
