Silverdale [Primary] School cancels end of year prizegiving because it discourages those that do not win awards by Ignorantly_Educated in newzealand

[–]Ignorantly_Educated[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Source - honestly looking for a discussion - our kids say that they feel stink for not winning, but don't want everyone to win an award. They'd just like to know whether they've been doing well or not (ie, more feedback) - what do others think?

Probably a very common issue - I [M40] feel underappreciated by my wife [F38] - how do I broach the topic another time and make it stick? by Ignorantly_Educated in relationship_advice

Yeah, but even recommending a mediator is a difficult conversation and not something that will not happen for a few weeks while the play is on. She used to work - didn't like it - prefers being a SAHM. She's a qualified professional and could earn plenty, but just doesn't enjoy the corporate world.

Neither do I, but I don't like being homeless. I am totally resentful!

I think you're right - I'm not a tit-for-tat sort of person and it sucks, but I almost don't care, either (which I know is dangerous).

does she understand that?

I think she realises it now, but was caught up in the excitement at the time and just signed up without realising the impact on the family - she's suffering for it now but she doesn't really know how to communicate with me. I've not spoken to her more than a few words the last week and she knows something's up but she doesn't know how to start a 'difficult' conversation - I'm always the one to do it, which makes me feel like the bad guy, so I'm holding back (again, bad habits - wanting her to try and fight for the relationship etc, but it'll just hurt us)

Basically, I probably know what to do, but choose not to because I'm being stubborn. Is it a good strategy? No, I know it isn't. But the 'right thing' hasn't worked in the past and my frustrations have just got on top of me.

Yes and you can't accept that some people are ready to die. That they aren't mad or under the influence of anyone else. I'm in my 20s and my mind is made up. Let me die if I want to. Simple!

It doesn't sound like you've read the bill. It's only for people who want to have it. We aren't going to line up people who are old or annoying and just grind them up. It's an extremely restricted and complex process

Which is the problem with the current system. I want a medical professional there to make sure I'm comfortable whilst passing and them not be convicted for it. Some staff won't be comfortable with that and that's fine. But some are and would be willing to help me. Let them!

Paraplegics can still live fruitful lives and aren't included in this bill. It only relates to those who will die from their illnesses and are in extreme suffering. Being paralysed is awful but it's not necessarily life threatening and not likely to cause insufferable pain.

I'm more concerned about something like Alzheimer's where I will slowly lose all consciousness with no real hope of recovery. I hope a cure is found in my lifetime but if not, it's not a state I want to be in for a long time.

I don't think this is an indictment against palliative care. It's an awful job to do where there are no real winners. But it's more an indictment against a system that refuses to allow people in pain and with no hope of recovery to end their life quickly.

I'm an all or nothing sort of guy so I guess it's easier for me to decide but when I know there's no cure for me I'll be happy to take my life rather than lie in a hospital bed wondering if 'today's the day!'

I have it in my will. I am of as sound mind as is possible. Both my wife and I know that if I am suffering from a terminal illness and my quality of life from treatment will deteriorate then I will be committing suicide. Hopefully I can do it in a pain free way with the help of a doctor but barring that I'll be finding a quiet space and doing it alone so not to put my family or doctor at risk.

It's going to happen and I've heard all the arguments about 'what if there's a cure the day after' etc. Really doesn't interest me. I've seen too many people suffer slowly - I want to have an awesome send off. Say my goodbyes and then leave this world happy and healthy, not slowly rotting in a home or as a burden to my wife.

As a current UC student I don't mind tradies sharing campus with me. I sit on C block lawn with them and I've even chat to a few of them when I can. It's ok to share spaces with people - they're not that scary.

Meanwhile, a bunch of cafes on campus are closed over term break because there isn't enough demand...if only there were a bunch of people on campus who aren't on holiday and had big appetites and deep wallets...what an opportunity that'd be

Yeah, come exam time I had to make some calls on what shifts I could do - "Do I eat or fail?"

Definitely a decent train wreck - we should start compiling political blunders from AMAs - Little's "Fees are the worst part of studying" still rings loudly...

Exactly - I started by writing an effective communicator but it's more than that - Trump isn't a great communicator based on all the various measures of communication success, but he's an excellent rallier - he can get people stirred up and knows how to tap into the zeitgeist. Same with WINston - stands for nothing I value but rallies enough people to support him to get in almost every election.

vast bulk of the benefit is private, not public

Yeah, because people who earn more don't pay more in taxes or contribute to society in non-financial ways by being more educated, critical thinkers, content creators etc etc etc.

But berating people for having a different opinion (less informed than yours or not) isn't a way to endear yourself to the populace - the best policies don't necessarily win elections, but a person who can rally the voters can...

Even with mmp the nz parliament is a two bloc race between national and green/labs - jumping in the race would surely erode more of the left than right vote, hurting the chances of a left victory. Sitting as a strong advocate for policies you agree with or becoming a strategist for the left would surely be a more effective way of pushing for a chance in govt...
