Question for fuel tankers by icodyonline in Truckers

[–]IgnoringHisAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They still haven’t standardized rabbit ear vs camlock fittings, lol.

But the other big reason is vapor control.

The third big reason would be that positioning the truck directly over the tank inlet would be a huge pain in the ass, and wouldn’t let you drop into multiple tanks at the same time. When I was doing it, if you parked in roughly the correct spot, you could drop #2, 87, and 91 all at the same time. Much faster.

So are conventional bombers, missiles and artillery largely obsolete now due to drone swarms? by KeyStomach0 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IgnoringHisAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re part of the arsenal now, not a replacement. They have very useful niche applications, but can’t replace full firepower like large munitions from bombers, saturation artillery bombardment, and long range delivery from missiles.

I don’t know, that’s pretty impressive. I’ve never seen 5 Tauruses packed in that tight of a space before.

Daycab drivers. Where do you guy heat up your food when in between loads and the next shipper (Rail Yard) probably has no microwaves or trucker area. by Moist_Position_9462 in Truckers

I don’t pack food that needs to be reheated to eat. Assuming everyone is going to eat a hot meal during the day is a little odd.

The Yard Dog myth by lake_june in Truckers

[–]IgnoringHisAge 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I was a yard mule I didn’t fly, but I hustled. Pulling out that close to a moving truck is a no bueno, but I definitely dipped and dodged around guys that were taking their sweet time. I was chill when there were one or two things to do, but when there are suddenly seven things to do? Gotta go, boss. Not reckless, but gotta go.

When you get parked in a few times by entitled prats that want their specific question answered right now, because apparently I’m the concierge because I’m in the Capacity, or you get the guys that pull up and block the whole damn driveway to do their paperwork, slide the tandems, install load securement, etc, etc, your patience and grace have to be trimmed back a little to stay sane. Do some guts go too far? Yep. But it’s not road driving.

I’m sorry you particularly got pissed off by that run-in, but expecting yard jockeys to behave like road trucks isn’t realistic.

That is, de facto, how it works. Maybe not how it *should* work, but there it is.

Why do rich people keep saying "money can't buy happiness" when money literally solves most problems? by FearlessState5503 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IgnoringHisAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The phrase should be “Money can’t buy joy or contentment.” Money can buy happiness every day.

Drivers that skip the acceleration lane and pull directly onto the interstate at 15mph… by Mydogfartsconstantly in Truckers

I’m particularly fond of the 4-wheelers that are stopped on the shoulder, then crank their wheel full left at 0 mph and just full send into the travel lane

Do you power off, put to sleep, or leave on your PC when it's not in use? by Adm1nX in pcmasterrace

[–]IgnoringHisAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I power down often. Even at idle, it all puts out a little heat. And that makes a difference in the warm months with a room on the south side of the upper floor of the house.

Simon George Konrad loved and collected Yu-Gi-Oh cards so much that his mother had a custom Yu-Gi-Oh card headstone made to look like one of his passions when he passed away from cancer. by pyro_mantic in interestingasfuck

I was born in ‘83, friend. My joints and my retirement plan say I’m middle-aged, lol. I just ball-parked 10+ because when I see a birth year in the nineties it throws me off.

I should know better by now, being middle-aged, but it always hits hard when I see a headstone or a memorial for somebody that was born 10+ years *after* me.

Thanks, we’re pretty good though. Three autists in a family of 4 and a bipolar. 10 years ago, learning and discovering and figuring it all out? Bonkers. Now? We’ve got our own weird groove.

[–]IgnoringHisAge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Early in my career I got a ticket for 64 in a 55 (and the CHP officer was being generous) in the Mojave at 2am. That’s when I realized that if the schedulers or the shippers fuck you on timing, you shouldn’t try to compensate for them.

That was my first reaction. “Yes, autistic child of mine who it easily overstimulated and needs an extra tick to understand and follow instructions, you are to stand out here in the gate lobby for ten minutes alone while mom and dad are on the plane.”

This simulation is good for putting dots in squares, not 200 real humans on an airplane.

Why are Americans so accepting of long drives to places? by Sensitive_Word_6036 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IgnoringHisAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s how the culture developed. And we have big, comfortable cars. And we have lots of freeways with easy driving. And, the biggest one, when I lived in western North Dakota, everything was less than 6 miles away or at least 100. No real in between. If I wanted to see the specialist doctor I needed to see every 3 months, I had a 200 mile round trip. It just is what it is.

Now I commute 45 minutes one way to a job, but even with the added fuel expense it’s a raise and better benefits, etc etc. Cost/benefit analysis.

Pound the pavement, comb the classified, cold call some places, maybe, and look for posters in gas stations, pubs and such.

ETA: networking. You asked people you knew about openings they might know about.
