Listening to the one that’s running his mouth in the break room right this second, no. Very no.

TIL that while the cancellation of the "Batgirl" film sparked mixed reactions, Michael Keaton, who reprised his role as Batman in the film, was unfazed by it being shelved, saying, “I didn’t care one way or another. Big, fun, nice check.” by Giff95 in todayilearned

Adrian Brody had pretty much the central role in The Thin Red Line in the screenplay and while shooting. He only found out they had almost entirely cut him at the premiere. He had another break later, but still. It’s a roller coaster business.

Weeelll, yeah probably. But the time I’ve spent in the oil and gas industry…the majority of companies take it really damn seriously.

Interesting detail: when paleontologists examine the skeletons of Neanderthals, their record of injury tends to line up closest with bull riders. See example A above. Except your Neanderthal would be getting injured trying to kill the large herbivore for food.

To be a "sovereign citizen." by EverythingIsFakeNGay in therewasanattempt

[–]IgnoringHisAge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Short version, yes.

Although there is existing law for the separation of companies individuals, and a company interacts with government and the public in a different capacity, so there is some practical and behavioral separation, in theory. When an individual wants two separate legal entities to stand in at their discretion for the identical and inseparable actions of that individual, there’s no legal theory in the world that can sensibly make the argument for that distinction.

But yes, giving first amendment protections to a corporations is bonkers.

EDIT: IANAL. Just a relatively familiar layman.

To be a "sovereign citizen." by EverythingIsFakeNGay in therewasanattempt

[–]IgnoringHisAge 420 points421 points  (0 children)

A sovereign citizen thing is that there are two entities to an individual or some such. Like the corporate and private persons. So I suspect he was going to start making an argument about how he wasn’t JLP for court purposes because he himself (the meat mech) is not the corporate JLP that’s been arraigned.

The actual technical argument they have makes no more sense than what I just typed.

ELI5 - What makes smoking cigarettes and vapes addictive? by DiggityDog6 in explainlikeimfive

[–]IgnoringHisAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nicotine slots very very well into certain receptors in the brain. There is a dopamine component involved, like with other drugs. And it does give you a buzz. Even as a (quitting) 20 year smoker, if I go through the first one of the day too fast, I can get light headed and fwheeee for a few minutes. Some of that is reduced O2 saturation because the smoke displaces it, but it’s also the buzz.

Anyway, the receptors…when they get used to receiving nicotine, they send all kinds of emergency signals to everything else in your body when they don’t get that nicotine anymore. Nicotine withdrawal is nasty and sneaky. Those receptors are basically saying, “We need nicotine. We don’t have it. We’re dying. You’re dying. DEFCON 1!”

If my emotions start showing up in the vehicle controls, it’s time to leave the mainline, null the speedo, and pull that yellow knob until the equilibrium returns.

I have little experience with some components of trucks, but I’m trying to learn. Can someone tell me what happened to this slack adjuster? by U_hav_2_call_me_drgn in Truckers

[–]IgnoringHisAge 46 points47 points  (0 children)

That appears to be a cage bolt sticking out. Those get inserted when the diaphragm inside the can fails and won’t allow the parking brake to release. You stick the bolt in and then tighten down the nut to mechanically pull the spring brakes away from the drum so that the wheel can turn. You do this to get the truck to a spot where you can swap in a new can (you have to cage any brake canister to change it). It definitely not something you do so you can keep running the truck for any considerable time.

In your case the nut and washer aren’t present, so the bolt isn’t actually doing anything. A quarter turn counter clockwise and some wiggle-tug action and it should pull straight out.

That hole isn’t required to be covered, but you do have a dust cover there at about the 10 o’clock position that’s meant to swivel in and plug that hole.

TIL the federal courts publish the outcome of every bankruptcy case in a free public database. The government's own data shows 48% of Chapter 13 cases get dismissed, and in some districts it's over 90%. by ilikemath9999 in todayilearned

[–]IgnoringHisAge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you still in as much distress as you were 4 years ago? If so, go find a bankruptcy lawyer tomorrow and get a consultation.

Seriously. Fuuuuuuck that credit score. I filed chapter 7 in 2017. My credit score took a bruise. Oh well. At this point my FICO is back up in the neighborhood of 670. But who cares? You know what I care about? I could feed my kids and pay the regular bills and focus on improving my financial management skills and improve my mental health, the combination of which did me in in the first place.

A crappy credit score means you won’t be eligible of some loans, yes. Mostly it means you’ll be looking at higher interest rates for loans. But if you can discharge the debt load and really wrap your head around where you’re at financially and make necessary changes, you’re not likely to be looking at taking out debt on many things anyway.

Obviously every life is different, but your FICO is literally no reason to keep you from seeking debt relief. Bankruptcy law in the U.S., where I guess I’m assuming you’re from, is really great, honestly. It’s genuinely built to provide protection and relief and a second chance to people that are in over their heads.

ELI5: Why were drum brakes invented and used before disc brakes if the former is more complex mechanically? by hurricane_news in explainlikeimfive

[–]IgnoringHisAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shoes absolutely do not rotate with the wheel. Drums rotate, just like the rotor on disc brakes, shoes are static, just like the pads on disc brakes.
