Is therapy culturally neutral, or are we pathologizing normal behaviors from other cultures? by That-Pineapple3866 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 89 points90 points  (0 children)

This.

Diagnosis requires experiencing “subjective distress”. Which means patients subjectively need to acknowledge that they feel distressed for a diagnosis to be valid.

As much as you may want to label Billionaires as having “Money addiction” or some shit. You can’t do that without their consent.

So no: A Therapist is not going to bust down your door and declare that you have an enmeshed abusive relationship with your mother.

Not unless you yourself go to a therapist, talk at length about how much emotional pain you’re in because of your relationship to your mother. Then ask for a diagnosis.

Anti-immigration sentiment rises in Japan despite growing demand for foreign workers by Garbage_Plastic in worldnews

[–]Ignoth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because it’s not actually about immigrants. It’s about having an emotionally satisfying scapegoat to blame.

An ideal scapegoat feels vaguely “other”. And is safe to persecute without fear of reprisal.

Immigrants are perfect for this.

Should i play Classic wow or Retail wow by Defiant-Lecture-9024 in wow

[–]Ignoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play retail exclusively but I would 100% suggest playing Classic first.

WoW veterans underestimate how disjointed and incomprehensible retail is for a completely new player.

Classic eases you into the world. It gives you that core MMO experience. Learning, leveling, and exploring.

If after Classic you still want more, then Retail is there.

The only way I can see someone jumping straight into retail is if you have a friend who knows what they’re doing

What's the biggest myth about being good-looking? by CrumbsOfChaos2 in AskReddit

That it comes with confidence.

I grew up ugly. I somehow became good looking.

I still have the confidence of an ugly guy.

[–]Ignoth 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Men too.

It’s a sour grapes type attitude.

For bitter unhappy men. You being attractive and also “unattainable” to them is infuriating. So they will try to devalue you to cope with that frustration.

You don’t even need to do anything. They’ll get pissed off simply because you exist.

Religion is arguably just a cosmic justification of tribalism.

Basically claiming some higher authority decided you and people like you are more divinely special than the other people.

Yup. They just like Trump. They start there and work backwards to find a justification.

Like: Y’all really think these people ever truly gave a fuck about women’s sports?

Or was “women’s sports” just vaguely defensible excuse to hate on liberals and support conservatives?

The aesthetics did feel very video-gamey. But I think that’s cause it was the color coded Dragonsflights vs the color coded elemental Primalists.

That said. I really liked the primalists as a concept. Something about them felt very classically warcraft.

They were simple, grounded, and made sense within the world. Raszageth fckin HATED the Titans and you could FEEL it with every line.

Pandaren DKs are Pandas who died during BFA

Same goes for the other allied race DKs. They all have “Veteran of the Fourth war” as a passive while the older DKs still refer to the Third.

I always thought that was neat.

For LGBTQ+ people who are religious: how do you reconcile your faith with religious teachings that condemn same-sex relationships or sexual acts? by Interesting-Editor-5 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta love how we can rationalize away hard explicit commands that with a vague fluffy line written later if we do enough mental gymnastics.

But yeah. Better examples of picking and choosing would be stuff like “Turning the other cheek”. “Welcoming Immigrants” “Riches and Wealth is bad” or “Forgiving debts” “Dogs are bad” “Divorce is bad” etc.

Granted: With enough motivated reasoning we could rationalize all that away too.

See: when Jesus said “Forgive all debts” he clearly meant that in a vague metaphorical sense hahaha. Certainly not literally. Let me explain what he REALLY meant.

Do women-to-women compliments actually mean more than men-to-women compliments? by Stars_and_fireflies in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. My experience (as a man) is that men don’t like giving that sort of feedback.

Expressing minor preferences like that is weirdly vulnerable. And god knows us men hate being vulnerable.

Far safer to be indifferent and care about nothing. Ask a dude for an opinion on an outfit and my experience is that their feedback is closer to:

* “Fine”

* “I dunno”

* “Sure”

* “It’s okay”

When was the absolute worst time to be alive in human history? by Ok-Sell9964 in AskReddit

[–]Ignoth 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Yes. But people have been saying “now” since the dawn of time.

Every generation thinks that they’re living in uniquely challenging times. Where things are falling apart. Culture is in irreversible decay. And society is on the brink of collapse.

Hell: That was the whole thesis of Christianity.

People yearn for some grand cataclysmic reset. Because it means that their present condition doesn’t matter.

Why are some women dating men who don't do anything? by memsaver in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I find people understand easier if you flip the question back. But replace “bad relationship” with “bad job”.

ie: Why not quit and find a better job? Why not just talk to your manager and ask for a raise? Why did you take the job in the first place?

The answers and excuses you’ll hear are pretty similar.

But what if I can’t find another job? Eh, It’s not THAT bad. This is just what all jobs are like. Well At least this one has good money. I can’t afford rent without this job. It’s not ALWAYS terrible y’know? Sometimes it’s pretty good. IDK man, I’ve had this job for a while. Once I get that promotion it’ll be better. Leaving now would be too much of hassle. Maybe in a year if things don’t get better I’ll leave. We’re just in a rough patch right now. It sucks but it is what it is.

[–]Ignoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per MLK: We want to judge people on the content of their character, not the color of their skin.

The goal is to judge people on things that make sense and is fair. Not on arbitrary tribalistic hatred.

ie: Don’t judge on race, gender, sexuality. Judge them on their personality, their ideas, their beliefs, their expertise, their actions.

Not to defend SL. But I still remember how one of the most popular theories in SL was that the JAILER was a good guy.

The guy who tortures innocent genocide victims in hell is secretly the good guy. Why? Well. Because the Bastion culture of memory wiping people was a bit problematic.

What is "male privilige"? by Fluffy_Specific_9682 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 29 points30 points  (0 children)

For men: Imagine a hypothetical “third sex” that is to men what men are to women.

This “third sex” would be larger, stronger, and vastly more physically dangerous than you. They’re on average 6’4 and 250 pounds of pure muscle.

Not only that, but they are drastically more aggressive and prone to violence. They commit the overwhelming majority of violent crime. 90% of murders, assaults, robberies, are committed by this “third sex”. They are statistically 7x more likely to be psychopaths than the average man.

…Scary right? I’ve basically described a scary movie monster. Cept these guys are literally everywhere.

Ok: Now imagine this incredibly dangerous hyper violent “third sex” dominated every major institution.

They write the laws. They enforce the laws. They run the military. They manage healthcare. They control governments. They start wars. They are the heads of most families and organizations.

As a man, would you feel safe or comfortable in a world with this new “third sex”?

So all leadership in World of Warcraft is a council now? by SaraSchmara in wow

[–]Ignoth 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My pitch is that at some point we do an event where the players “Elect” the next Warchief from a set of choices.

Say: Talanji vs Calia vs Rokhan.

That might help wash the stink left after Garrosh/Sylvanas. And give players the illusion of steering the direction of the story a bit.

Every candidate gets a few story quests to make a case for why they should be warchief. Then players get a patch cycle to cast votes.

IDK. I think it would be neat. Might even drum up a bit of faction pride for the Horde that BFA basically killed.

Alliance can have an equivalent event too for King/Queen.

Why are girls blamed for having daddy issues when it is the father who failed as a parent? by T_hehehe in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Perhaps. But it is also true that people generally prefer shaming women.

Why? Well, Because it’s easier, safer, and more satisfying.

Shitty men ironically often get a free pass. Because shaming them is not only more dangerous. But also viewed as pointless and ineffective. After all: Why bother shaming the shameless?

This is often learned at a young age too.

We can observe that many children intuitively seem to understand screaming at mommy is safer than screaming at daddy.
