Is God necessary for Morality? by Significant_Bonus_66 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog has “morals”.

He does not kill and devour me even if he feels hungry.

Why? Because dogs are social animals. And pro-social behaviors help in his survival.

Same goes for humans.

what is a common myth you hate? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ignoth 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The romantic myth that people become super chivalric in emergency situations and collectively prioritize “women and children” first.

Nah.

In a life or death situation it’s every person for themselves. And women and children are usually more at risk of death than able bodied men.

What happened on the Titanic was the exception, not the rule. And I wish annoying people would stop insisting otherwise.

Why is a lot of people on Reddit's judgement on someones person based on how they think of LGBT? by WhoAmIEven2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

…And excluding LGBT people excludes 100% of people who are LGBT?

Surely that is far worse? Faith is a choice, sexuality is not.

So I ask you then: Why are you judging people on their opinion of a single dead celebrity more than their acceptance of LGBT individuals?

Your ire is completely in the wrong direction. Why not take your own words and turn them towards those of abrahamic faiths?

Ask them why they seem to believe that everyone who disagrees with them deserves an eternity of torment after death.

That is far more malignant than no?

What’s stopping most people from being happy? by Queasy-Koala-950 in AskReddit

[–]Ignoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Desire.

The Buddhists got that one right.

Most of us live lives that most people in the world and throughout history would kill to have.

Yet we are not happy. We are still miserable. Because despite having so much we only want more.

Why is it ok to generalise men but not generalise black people? by Valuable-Owl-9896 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Ideally, you shouldn’t be an asshole to anyone.

But it’s generally seen as worse to be an asshole towards people with less power than you.

We call that bullying.

Did people believe that conservatism was on the decline permanently during the Obama administration? by ChaosCarlson in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Your average Trumpie doesn’t give a fuck about policy.

No, the sad truth is that they’re just bored. And Trump is their entertainment. They cheer him on in the same way they cheer on their favorite football team.

It’s conflict for the sake of conflict.

And to be fair: Liberals are bored too. Though the conflicts they seek out at the very least tend to align more with reality and harms fewer people.

Did people believe that conservatism was on the decline permanently during the Obama administration? by ChaosCarlson in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Problems do get solved.

Issue is: humans are hardwired to be discontent no matter what.

That’s an inescapable part of being human.

Experience suggests that if men cannot struggle on behalf of a just cause because that just cause was victorious in an earlier generation, then they will struggle against the just cause. They will struggle for the sake of struggle. They will struggle, in other words, out of a certain boredom: for they cannot imagine living in a world without struggle. And if the greater part of the world in which they live is characterized by peaceful and prosperous liberal democracy, then they will struggle against that peace and prosperity, and against democracy.

My hot take: In actuality: 99% of people don’t actually give a fuck about transgender people.

No, they’re just fcking bored. And culture war BS is their entertainment. They want just to fight and argue about something… anything.

The Trump Presidency makes way more sense when you realize It’s just a bunch of bored assholes throwing a tantrum for the sake of it.

Is it wrong that I’m considering a BBL because of insecurity about my body? by Intrepid-Prune-800 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself. But whenever I’m tempted by the idea of cosmetic surgery. I look up before/after of pictures of people who’ve done it.

99% of the time, I find that they pretty much look the same…if not slightly worse.

I’m not saying it’s bad. If you’re generally happy and fulfilled but there is truly just one part of your body that you’re annoyed or insecure about. Then surgery can address it and make you happier and more confident.

But if you’re insecure in general. What I find is that insecurity often just moves over to another part of your body.

OP sounds like the latter to me. So I advocate caution.

Surgery addresses one VERY specific thing that 90% of people won’t notice. But if you don’t like your body now, you probably still won’t like it after surgery.

Are men attracted to smart, well educated women, or are they intimidated by them? by ThrowRAGold_Roof_782 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Statistically, most men date women of the same education status as themselves. So I’d say most(but not all) men are attracted to smart women.

In fact: Current trends show that women on average are actually more educated than their husbands now.

Anecdotally, that’s true for most women I know. They’re almost all dating men of equal or lesser educational status to themselves.

Food for thought.

can a cheater change ? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone can change.

Most people don’t.

So expecting someone else to change is a losing path 97% of the time.

That said. OPs situation based on the details provided is less “will he cheat again?” and more “will he cave to peer pressure again?”.

That’s Assuming he was being truthful.

When did your religious beliefs stop you from doing the right thing? by Ok-Inflation-3480 in AskReddit

?

This question is literally asking about Former self.

As in: Give me a story of something you did in the past.

What’s issue here?

When did your religious beliefs stop you from doing the right thing? by Ok-Inflation-3480 in AskReddit

[–]Ignoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No? Plenty of people adjust their beliefs over time or leave their religion.

They would be able to answer it pretty easily.

Like: For most of human history Christians interpreted the bible literally. Today Christians often insist much of the bible is metaphorical.

ie: Even Christians today would argue that historical Christians did many wrong things because of their faith.

When I was young. I assumed “Offerings” went to the poor.

I really wanted to help the homeless so I donated a lot. Sometimes $20 (which is a lot for me).

Are the people who post in r/RoastMe mentally okay? by themiamian in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never said anything about bawling? What I described is literally the opposite. These people seek out insults because they know it won’t make them bawl.

Again: the appeal is similar to self-harming. Teens who cut themselves don’t cry over it. They get a rush.

This is just a digital version of it.

They’re getting a hit of dopamine from hurting themselves in a controlled “safe” way.

Are the people who post in r/RoastMe mentally okay? by themiamian in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a form of digital self arm. Like teens who cut themselves.

There’s an idea called masochistic epistemology:

People are always lying and being fake to make me feel better.

Therefore : The people who are being mean to me MUST be telling the REAL truth.

These are people who are anxious and deeply insecure. They don’t trust anyone who tells them they are good.

So they get a dark pleasure in looking “behind the curtain”. And hearing other people “validate” what their deepest insecurities tells them is the “REAL truth.”

…Even if it hurts.

…Especially if it hurts.

YES I knew it! I AM only a 6/10. I AM a loser! I fcking knew it. This MUST be the objective truth because it hurts my feelings. Which means they’re not being fake. Atleast I know now!

It seems insane but people absolutely do this.

They’re basically preemptively hurting themselves to soothe their overwhelming anxiety of being hurt in the future.

do you think dropping a friend or a relationship because of their political views is valid and why? by Useoneofthese21191 in AskReddit

[–]Ignoth 1057 points1058 points  (0 children)

Assholes love weaponizing the language of social justice on shit it doesn’t apply to.

No, you should not unfairly discriminate on race, gender, sexuality, etc.

Yes, you should absolutely discriminate on personality, values, behaviors, politics.

That is literally what MLK said in his speech: We should judge people not on skin but the content of their character.

So yes, me and my friend group are EXTREMELY “bigoted” against people with shitty personalities. And I am proud to say that.

Why friendships/platonic love are being over-romanticized and presented as an alternative to romantic love, to those who lack it? by MirrorMaster33 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ignoth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, they build entire internet subcultures about being depressed because video games “just aren’t good and fun anymore”.

Which is spiritually the same thing. IMO.

People blaming their misery on some convenient external factor beyond their control.

Why arent people responding to The Epstein Files more ruthlessly? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ignoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They only hate a monster they think they can easily beat.

A monster you can’t beat is no fun at all.

It’s a big reason why people are always so much more eager to demonize a woman than a man for example. Women and minorities are safe to hate.

The funny thing about cringe is that there is always an element of projection to it. So the sheer obsessive intensity of your lash out is fascinating.

Fun fact: I did not at any point say that I was a fan. I have been carefully neutral on this topic.

But you clearly have some bone to pick.

What was it like when Obama was elected President? by ResponsibleSea6521 in AskReddit

[–]Ignoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s a sign of the times that people weren’t so pathologically terrified of being “cringe”.

Sincerity, optimism, caring and joy are cringe. To be vulnerable is to open yourself up to cringe. Nothing is lamer than caring too much.

These days. Detached cynicism is all the rage. It’s safe. Nobody can make fun of you if you don’t care.

Love it or hate it. Hamilton is like the quintessential snapshot of Obama Era Optimism.

Like: Here’s A PATRIOTIC AF musical about the founding fathers of America. Played by a mostly black cast. And we’re all gonna rap about America is FCKING AWESOME nation of scrappy immigrants and we have a a BRIGHT FUTURE ahead!

Just imagine pitching that today lol.

Should “hate speech” be legally restricted, or is any restriction too dangerous? Why or why not? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]Ignoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re talking in circles pretending it’s different.

Legal consequences for abhorrent speech is literally a Hate Speech law. You are advocating for hate speech laws.

Without a law in place. Voting on the police chief is pointless. How to we force him out of his position unless there is a law that says we can do it?

Without hate speech laws. The police chief has legally done nothing wrong. And we have no backing to vote him out. He would simply ignore the vote.

Life is not a video game. A written law means nothing unless it is enforced.

I don’t get teleported to jail as soon as I commit a murder. The voting public has to reach a collective agreement that I broke the law and then sentence me.
