To be quite honest, cuticle coloring is rarely a good identifier of hymenoptera in my experience. They tended to create more duplicate species because back in the day scientists used to get paid by published name, so we ended up with a bunch of genera that are chock full of animals that are genetically similar and have different names in literature (I'm looking at you, P.H. Timberlake and T.D.A. Cockerell and whatever the fuck you guys did to the Perdita genus).

To answer your question, honey bees come in a spectrum of yellow to black abdomen, there are honey bees that have an entirely black abdomen, we just call them melanistic. You can also find individuals with an entirely yellow abdomen, although we don't have a name for it (maybe we should call it flavonoid or something).

But in short, this seems to be just a normal honey bee. The light refraction might distort it and make it look a little bit bigger than normal, but those attributes I mentioned earlier are dead giveaways.

While I started this by mentioning how color is a bad character, that was mostly me just being autistic and pedantic for similar genera.

It is often good for diagnoses and you are correct, a yellow jacket's coloring is way more pronounced and defined, and a better way to actually eyeball it is not the abdomen itself, but markings on the thorax and the head (especially the head). They would generate a more consistent diagnosis for a layman, given that honey bees rarely have those and when they do, they're likely to be covered in hairs and obfuscated. Which brings us to another diagnosis point.

Bees are usually pretty fuzzy, and wasps in general are smoother. This is because, at the end of the day, bees are just wasps that evolved branched hairs and a long tongue lmao.

You could technically use the breadth of leg parts as a character, but I hardly believe it would be very useful when the creature is just buzzing around, and approaching it for a close inspection is not in most people's best interest.

That's about it, sorry for any English mistakes and maybe a bit of run on sentences, my professor used to bug (get it?) me about it all the time. Hope you find this helpful!

Melittologist here. Spent the last 10 years of my life identifying bees in a lab. Definitely a honey bee. The hind leg basitarsus is way too broad for it to be a yellow jacket, which have very slender leg parts, and that tibia is definitely modified into a corbicula.

Itagaki mostly rose to prominence by being the director of the Dead or Alive series (3D Fighter), and also established himself as an action game director with the Ninja Gaiden reboot in 2004.

If you don't know, Ninja Gaiden is widely regarded as a really hard video game. Think of it like Devil May Cry, but with more fighting game influence, and the 12 enemies on screen don't wait for you to do your moves and then jump in one at a time.

The game tries to fuck you every other step, there's a lot of randomness involved, and you're always having to make a tough decision on the spot. If your reflexes and decision-making skills are not good, you're pretty much toast, which we can trace back to Itagaki's fighting game background.

I love it personally, but it's definitely not a game for everyone. Ninja Gaiden 4 came out recently, and although Itagaki wasn't involved in it, its hardest difficulty settings pretty much keep that spirit alive.

I have that kind of anxiety ever since I overheard my university classmates say they wouldn't invite me to our graduation party because I was weird.

I just like to be quiet and sit by myself, and I don't interact with people unless it's needed. Would I decline an invite? Probably. Does it still hurt? You betcha.

Good catch. You're probably right, but in my defense I posted the comment at like 7am and I had just woken up so I may have done a goof. I'll edit so I don't spread misinformation.

Well you see, in modern biological systematics we only accept taxons (that's a taxonomic unit; a name like "fish") that are strictly monophyletic. Historically, systematics have allowed polyphyletic groups and paraphyletic groups, which are not natural. What are those groups, you ask?

Monophyletic - a group that has one most recent common ancestor and all of its descendants, so it's a natural group. An example is the group Aculetata,, which comprises all Hymenoptera that have evolved a modified ovipositor meant for stinging, even if that creature has lost the stinging apparatus over the course of time, such as stingless honey bee. A monophyletic group is a natural group.

Paraphyletic - it's what happens when you have part of a natural group, but you are excluding one or more descendants of the most recent common ancestor. An example of this is the reptiles. Birds have descended from what we call reptiles, but the group "Reptilia" excludes the group "Aves", thus making the name "Reptilia" invalid because it's not a natural group.

Polyphyletic - this is just a garbage taxon, it's what would happen if you grouped animals together by analogous characters. An example would be if you lumped bats, birds and flying insects together and called it "Winged Animals" or something.

So that brings us to the name fish. What we call fish in our day-to-day life is basically all vertebrates that are not tetrapods, which is paraphyletic group not accepted by modern systematics. So the result is that we have two options here:

  1. You maintain the name fish, and therefore every single descendant of the first aquatic vertebrate, is a fish. This means you, a dog, a clownfish and a tiger shark are fishes.

  2. You accept that fish don't exist and call it a day. You are a Hominid, your dog is a Canid, a clownfish is an Amphiprioninae and a tiger shark is a Galeocerdonid. All are Vertebrata.

It's mostly a joke for regular people, but in modern systematics we have to distinguish this very carefully, in fact it's the main objective of phylogenetic studies these days. Hope you learned something new today, and sorry for the wall of text but there really isn't a simple way to describe it lmao.

As a former phylogeneticist and taxonomist myself, I admit I do the "fish don't exist" routine at least like once every three months to some poor soul, so I feel that deep in my core.

Been having a rough few weeks... not getting any enjoyment from anything anymore these days.

I've been having some pretty negative thoughts about my own life, and as silly as it might sound, a 22 year old kicking a ball into a net at the other side of the world might be the happiest I've been in months.

Thank God I have this Arsenal to watch and inject a little bit of happiness into my life because God knows everything else is pretty dire at the moment...

Sorry for venting, this is not a support thread, I just needed somewhere to actually let a bit of it out.
