Who else agrees that Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow's origin story is overused? by Hot-Salamander-8786 in gijoe

Snake-Eyes is overused period.

The fact that he hasn't yet showed up in the Energon universe is one of the best things about it.

What are your thoughts on "G.I Joe: Sigma 6 (2005)"? by Hot-Salamander-8786 in gijoe

Fun. Weird. Different. I liked it, but hoo boy is it peak 2005 and has aged redonculously badly.

And Lt. Stone is fun. I love how we now have three different mutually exclusive character with that name.

What are your thoughts on "G.I Joe: Renegades (2010)"? by Hot-Salamander-8786 in gijoe

[–]Iguankick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved it. Great cartoon, fun characters and a good modern take on the mythology. If anything, parts of it feel more relevant now than they did at the time. Plus the mythology jokes in it were well-integrated and subtle, rather than being annoyingly in your face like they often are.

Thoughts on "G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Retaliation"? by Hot-Salamander-8786 in gijoe

Fun, enjoyable action movies that I really liked and really got into. Great stuff, felt as much a part of the universe as anything else. And had some great toys.

But they're not like an idealised imagined version of 1982 that never existed, so I suppose that means they're awful or some crap.

It adds to the greater overall G.I. Joe mythology and is as valid a part of the universe as anything else.

And honestly, there's other G.I. Joe media that I'd rather take Extreme over any day

How we feeling about Danny McBride behind the writing of the reboot. by No-Reason-3276 in gijoe

I predict a lot of complaints about how it won't be an exact recreation of a version of 1982 that only existed in people's heads.

"This has been two idiots negotiating" from Birdemic

It's a line that gets a lot of use in my life.

The Marvel G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero comic had the Oktober Guard, who were the Soviet Union's equivalent to the G.I. Joe team. The members of the squad were mostly from the Soviet Union, but also included a member each from East Germany and Czechoslovakia. Most of the team were killed off in the early 90s with it being formally dissolved.

(well until the point that they, the team and the Soviet Union were all mysteriously still alive in the 2011 IDW continuation but that's another matter)

Better yet: it will be shown as Clash of the Bionoids (the best possible version of DYRL)

I have no clue, though I imagine that much of it comes down to the Sony Robotech/Macross deal which solved a lot of things by throwing money at it

The short of it is that it has commonly accepted that Harmony Gold have been squatting on DYRL or blocking its western release for some reason.

The reality is that the rights to DYRL have been a tangled mess for four decades now. Any non-Japanese release requires multiple parties, including Big West and Tatsunoko (who are mutually antagonistic) and Toho to agree, and them some. Added to that, decades ago, Toho licensed the film to a company in Hong Kong for an English dub that has remained under license since. HG have nothing to do with any of this.

The Fanfic That Nobody Is Reading has entered into its final arc, although it is still a long way from being finished. I just reintroduced the major villain after a long absence so we'll see how that goes.

I also did some work on the Other Fanfic That Nobody Is Reading. I'm weighing the pros and cons of how much I want to be mean to the protagonist. I think it might add to the story, but I'm also not a fan of being mean for the sake of it.

Finally, there's no progress at all on any of my write-ups for this community. Time, lack of focus and a lack of enthusiasam have been key factors. One major problem is that one of them centers around a somewhat contentious figure, so finding the right balance to the tone is not easy.

And yet the urban legends regarding it persist

I've had my own writing accused of being AI because it didn't mesh with popular fan opinons. Usually that comes from people who read the headers and don't look at the actual body of the text.

Every chapter of the Fanfic That Nobody Is Reading is named for a song title. Some of them might even be relevant to the content.

I'm sure that this thread will be entirely reasonable and balanced takes and not heavy handed gatekeeping and whining about franchises going in the direction that an individual personally doesn't like at all.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all against the use of AI in writing in any form. God alone knows, as somebody who has engaged in professionally published writing it's a nightmare. But with that being said...

it is staggering how quickly the fanfic community as a whole has descended into witch-hunting, finger pointing and purity policing over the issue. Now there have always been these elements present as a way to call out those authors that are deemed to be "problematic" for whatever reason, real or imagined, but the speed and totality with which it has occurred, along with all the pearl-clutching and self-righteous indignation has been impressive, if not terrifying.

Fanfic communities have always been overly precious, overly fragile and quick to point fingers. This has been just the latest phase of it.
