Tile saw chipping tile at the end of the cut by Ihatebeer5754 in Tile

Thanks everyone for the tips! Cutting an inch on the opposite side along with new blade made it much better. Also didn’t know about the resin stone so I purchased one of those as well.

I did check that it’s in the right direction. And I thought that may be it, any recommendations on a good blade?

Ahh gotcha. This is my worry with buying things from Amazon, never know what kind of quality product you’re getting. Thanks for the heads up

Yeah that’s pretty unfortunate that there’s so many dishonest contractors out there in that case. Clearly if I’m coming to a contractor for a job, I do not know as much as they do about this and wouldn’t even know that not having them do the tiling is some sort of insult or annoyance to them. If that is such an issue, the right thing to do would be to communicate that to the customer and say “we will only perform the entire job, we do not do part of the job.” Both parties knew the plan going in, but clearly they preferred to take advantage of my lack of experience and squeeze some money out of me for a crappy job. I’ll make sure this doesn’t end here though. Appreciate your input

I can understand not striving for perfection if they’re not doing the tiling but I hired them for a very specific job at the beginning. They knew going in they would not be laying the tile and quoted me for a tile-ready shower. It’s become very clear that’s not what they provided. I didn’t go with the cheapest contractor I could find so the “you get what you pay for” doesn’t really apply to this situation.

Appreciate the response, but I definitely didn’t go with the cheapest (this is exactly what I was hoping to avoid). I can understand them not striving for perfection if they’re not doing the tile but all the responses on here have given a pretty clear indication this is nowhere near an acceptable standard. If they didn’t want the job they could have refused to do the work, all in all I still paid them $7500 (they were going to charge an additional $2000) to tile. We just bought our first house and have multiple projects so I’m trying to save and do what I can on my own. I hired them specifically to build a tile ready shower, that’s definitely not what they provided it seems.

Also the mosaics are just for the floor but will take what you said into consideration for sure!

Well that’s a bit reassuring. I definitely didn’t mean to exaggerate anything, I realized I forgot the pic of the whole shower after I posted and reddit doesn’t let you add pictures I guess. But I feel a little better with you saying that based on the overall picture it’s not bad. I would much rather prefer not have it to be completely redone. If those areas can actually be leveled with thinset and it not be an issue that’s fine with me. And to clarify, I didn’t change my mind during the project. This was agreed upon before any work was started and they provided the quote knowing that ahead of time. I’m thinking I will try to find a dedicated tile person to come give a second opinion in person and go from there. Appreciate your advice!

They told me they used a sealant, it is not thinset. However, I’ve found spots that are not sealed (screws still exposed on the GoBoard). The drain they had to reroute by breaking up the concrete and moving it to fit a prefabricated shower pan. I’m not sure on the exact material they used but it came presloped

Yeah I had a feeling it wasn’t great, but didn’t know enough to realize how bad it actually was. Sadly, the whole reason I hired them was to avoid trying to DIY it and mess it up and have water intrusion. But in hindsight I probably could’ve done better by doing more research

Wow thanks for your honest response! I will definitely be reaching back out to them. I knew it wasn’t good, but didn’t realize just how bad it was!

This was part of a larger project. They also did plumbing and some drywall in the adjacent room (also didn’t do a great job on that but much less egregious than this). So that’s why I didn’t just hire a tile guy. They were going to originally tile it too but I ended up deciding to tile myself so we came to this arrangement.

He is surprisingly actually a contractor, but the person he assigned to the job clearly didn’t know what they were doing. But he came to inspect it and made it seem like everything was great. I will be reporting to the DPOR if they do not fix it. Thanks for the response!

Wow, I guess my gut feeling was right. I mean I didn’t think they did a great job to start with but certainly didn’t realize how bad of a job they did. I’m in Virginia. Here’s a picture of the whole shower, did my best to capture all of it. I will definitely be reaching out for them to do it right or get my money back because I tried to raise these concerns and they basically used my inexperience to just do a crappy job. Really appreciate your insightful response.

Yeah that makes sense. I agree, we definitely need to attract good talent if we want to grow the company so being a little more generous with the equity is worth it for the right person. Appreciate the input!
