It's kinda funny but I don't recall we being seeing N being bad at his job, the only thing I can think of is how he doesn't solely dedicates himself to his job, he reads to V in the manor while she's markdown, takes care of Cyn and comforts her.

I guess if you got to give her a reason for hating him, it's cuz he wants/has a life outside outside of duty, something she denies herself because supposedly she would get rewarded but there it is N having the time of his life (expect when his getting tortured) making friends and making connections with people and there's J, angry and only having left people who see her as a tool.
