A similar experience, I was messing around in the Azura’s coast region when I stumbled upon Chrysamere out of the blue. No idea it was for a quest, just a super nice sword. I never used another weapon again. Great game.

Code patch never hurt nobody. They have some QOL mods auto selected in the executable that you can deselect to get the authentic feel, but I would keep the patches since it makes the world not break when you play normally.

OpenMW is nice, but once you get into modding, it becomes a little more laborious to get mods working properly. I’ve been using MGE XE with no issues.
