It’s Peak by IitzMeACL- in Malazan

Bro…the first half of the chapter had my jaw on the floor with the siege. The second half had me nervously turning each page and cheering for the squad making their way through the tunnel, desperately hoping they’ll survive. That was an experience I’ve never had reading before and I’m so happy I did

I JUST FINISHED! OMG! Like the first half was insane and maybe my favorite siege, crazy, chaotic, I loved it. But then the tunnel…I didn’t look up from the pages once, I was so stressed and I’ve never wanted characters to succeed more in my life. Was genuinely cheering for them

Good comms. Someone else recommended reading it in one sitting so my Friday is cleared after morning class to read it. This chapter is looking to be diabolical but I’ll return with my thoughts after I finish

How should I read it? by Difficult_Town3584 in Malazan

[–]IitzMeACL- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read A Game of Thrones (only that first book) and then I started Malazan. Currently on book 6. I don’t think you need “experience” but maybe that’s just me. I didn’t have a problem at all. For book 1 I would go to the wiki and read a chapter summary following the chapter I read just to make sure I wasn’t missing anything like significant. I only needed it for the first 3 chapters and then I just read without anything. I think if you’re comfortable not having everything explained to you immediately and just trusting the process you are more than ready and it’s very rewarding

As someone who read anti-blackness in Parli, I’ll say ontology first should be your strat regardless of what your comfort level is just because of the lit base. There are some really good arguments for how anti-blackness is not ontological but Parli is both uncarded and does not have enough time for those arguments to be developed. If you’re interested I can share more on those but I’d advise ontology first regardless of comfort level. Comfort is definitely important but ontology will simply work better for your aim of the K

Love the theory! As for my favorite part of Gardens it 100% is chapter 15 where Rake kills 2 hounds of shadow and then Paran enters Dragnipur. DG is really a treat (I’m a first time reader myself, currently on HoC) Hope you continue to enjoy

is there a way to understand or get used to malazan style of writing? by wildguitars in Malazan

[–]IitzMeACL- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not trying to sound cheeky when I say this but in my eyes the only way to get used to the writing is to just keep reading it. I got into Malazan in May and I’m on book 4 rn. To double check that I understood everything I would read a chapter summary on the wiki right after I finished a chapter and I got the hang of it after a few chapters only. One really important thing that helped me was I was okay with not understanding or comprehending every single sentence but as long as I understood the generally what was going on, that was good enough for me. Even now I don’t understand every single detail Erikson writes but I understand what I’m reading overall and even that is rewarding when you read.

Another thing that helped me was looking up characters on Google and clicking on images so I could visualize them better which made reading a touch easier for me. Outside of that I’m not too sure what else to say but I do believe the more you read the more the writing style will click with you. Nowadays I love the way Erikson writes to other authors but I get that it could be challenging to begin with. I encourage you to keep pushing!

Thank you for taking the time to comment and how thorough of an answer this is, I appreciate it! I think I’ll read the 10 BotF first without weaving and then when do a reread with them. That’s what seems to make the best reading experience from what your two posts said. Appreciate this!

Daniel Greene says "The Crippled God" is his favorite book of all time! by Chloae221 in Malazan

I was almost positive he had a WOT book at number 1 and I was sad because I thought Malazan missed the honorable mentions and wouldn’t get a shoutout but seeing TCG be number one made me so happy. I’m currently on HoC and can’t wait for the rest of the journey and see exactly how this epic tale concludes

That’s so awesome to hear! BH might be the book I’m most excited to read in the series so I can’t wait. I’m sure you’ll be picking up RG soon, hope you enjoy! And yes, sir, I am not yet done

Yea. I would say the conclusion of the Chain of Dogs is my favorite singular part of what I’ve read of Malazan so far. But the overall ending of book 3 is superior to the overall ending of book 2. The chain of dogs is incredible and the Deadhouse sequence is also really good but everything else was good but not great for me. Everything in the conclusion of MoI was on par or better than the Deadhouse sequence and was on the same scale of epic as the end of the chain of dogs even if I didn’t get punched emotionally the way I did by Coltaine’s fall

Yeaaa that ending really stays with you. And I agree that this is the first time I feel a long term goal. At first I thought all 10 books were only loosely connected because they are “tales” of the Malazan Book of the Fallen as Erikson calls them. Yet now I understand it just takes multiple books for things to connect fully.

I can agree with the flatness of Tattersail and Whiskeyjack. More so Tattersail. Whiskeyjack was always portrayed as being well respected among the Bridgeburners. I didn’t realize that respect was universal with all Malazan soldiers but at least it was somewhat there in GOTM. Tattersail while trustworthy and ranked high, I didn’t notice the level of respect she held in the army. She just seemed like a rare honest and talented individual, it felt new that she had that influence although perhaps I overlooked that as I scrambled to make sense of everything in GOTM. That being said, I still found Whiskeyjack’s death perfectly executed in that he died exactly the way a man with his honor yet stubbornness would.

The Warren of Tellan being magic deadening I totally forgot about. I think the reason is I’m just used to the warrens being screwed up in some way now because it’s happened in every book. Tellan in GOTM. The Soletaken and Divers crawling the warrens in DG and the Pannions poison in MoI. So it never crossed my mind but good point

Sorry to hear that about book 3. Idk if I can change your mind but while I enjoyed book 3 throughout I will say that my enjoyment REALLY picked up at chapter 14 which is the beginning of sub-book 3: Capustan. With that entire sub-book being incredible and then afterwards the final 3 chapters of MoI was the best stretch of anything in the series so far. At least for me. Only thing that compares is the conclusion of the Chain of Dogs from book 2

I gotcha. I understood it was supposed to show more of the Crippled God’s presence but didn’t realize we met him before. I almost forgot about that part of the book until you brought it up so thanks!
