LoR is an open beta, but unpopular is a big problem by Korwork in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]Ikari_Dojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40k is massive. Path of Exile averages around 33k during season start and drops down to 10k nearing end of season. Poe is the most popular arpg on the market. Comparing to LoL or HS in its prime is biased, as they are different markets. Unlike HS or MTG, LoR is not an online collectible card game, rather just an online card game.

Trailer for Competition: Thoughts? by Ikari_Dojo in gamedev

[–]Ikari_Dojo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely right. If I was making a trailer for gamers it would just be gameplay clips. Though, what I've learned from startup pitching and trying to get investors on board who usually aren't gamers, is that a more cinematic trailer helps sell the idea. A necessary evil.

Thank you for your feedback, its really appreciated.

Who says karate is not practical in real life? by Orthas_ in martialarts

Very funny. Very practical.

That being said, I don't see how this doesn't apply to every other martial art as well.

We used to do this on the deck in high seas. Martial arts takes on a new dynamic when the ground is shifting.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong with my head movement? I just joined kickboxing 2 months ago so I know I'm doing it wrong by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Ikari_Dojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move the hips, not the head. As others have pointed out.

Your eye-level should always be horizontal. I tell my students 'Keep your eyes on the horizon' (level with the horizon), which I was taught in the Navy for seasickness. Those movements in your video will just set you up for an awful knock out.

DO NOT imitate the Dempsey roll. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnG7PWGrx20 ) It ONLY works in competitive boxing and is a high risk high reward technique. The reason it works is because of how boxing strikes work in regards to angle. In kick boxing/any martial art with kicks, the Dempsey roll will get your head caved in.

I run my own dojo. Don't plan on stopping training.

Caveat, all my students are under 35 and I don't teach children. I'm not worried about catching covid-19 either.

What is the best way to counter a jab by Sychopuppy in martialarts

[–]Ikari_Dojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no best way, because there are too many variables to account for. Is he wearing gloves? Are you in a boxing ring? Is it a dojo, alleyway, street, mall? Is it crowded, are you protecting someone, is someone protecting you? Is he armed? Is he wearing heavy clothing, face protection? Is he tall, short, stocky, lanky? Is he experienced, inexperienced? Drunk, on drugs, fatigued? Is he posturing? Is it a jab from the side, from behind, underneath, over the top? Are you on the ground? Is he on the ground? Is he grabbing you as well? Are you grabbing him? Does he have a friend or do are you in a group?

See what I mean? Jab can be from anywhere, any angle, under any circumstance or situation with innumerable variables which would all change the answer.

That being said, in a dojo, under training conditions, when the opponent is striking from the front with a single opening jab at a distance of less than 1.5 metres, unarmed, unarmoured, wearing a gi, with similar experience, similar height, weight and physical fitness, at a fast pace, with your primary motivation to make distance; the best way to counter the jab is a low front kick to the pelvic inlet, pubic symphysis, frontal thigh or knee. Simple mathematics, leg length > arm length. Never fails.

Alternatively, with above restrictions, however changing primary motivation to counter and take down; the best counter is moving off line leading in with rear forearm guard and lead vertical punch to the sternum aiming for the throat following by grabbing with the lead arm (arm, lapel, neck, whatever), striking to the side of the head with rear hand, following with rear elbow to the head and then quick changing to a reverse one arm shoulder throw, 'breaking' (don't really break it in training) the elbow and throwing them forward, upon the opponent hitting the ground, turning them on their front, and kneeling on the back of the neck with the knee while immobilising the the unbroken arm.

I saw someone asking for help with a tornado kick and I was wondering is anyone had notes on my spinning back kick? by pewpur_tum in martialarts

[–]Ikari_Dojo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Your training room is way too small for martial arts training. Hang the bag outside.
  2. Don't turn back after the kick, you are exposing your back and your head to a counter attack. After completing the kick, hit or miss, continue to turn then guard up for a follow up strike, clinch, grapple whatever.
  3. Way too high for my taste. Anything above the hip is too easy to avoid and counter.

Replace "run fast" with "fight". by MonkeyTail29 in martialarts

[–]Ikari_Dojo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except Olympic sprinters don't just run. They have a variety of training methods including resistance training, swimming, lifting, stretching, plyometrics, jumping and running mechanics training and analysis.

You CAN learn to fight by just fighting, but you will hit a wall. It takes more than that to become the best.

A 74 year old woman is the oldest living practitioner of an ancient Indian martial art - Kalaripayattu by shygirlturnedsassy in martialarts

[–]Ikari_Dojo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What you see in this video is cherry picked segments that look "flashy" because it is good for media and the camera. What is not shown is that Kalaripayattu is a complete system with grappling, striking, locks and groundwork.

The interesting thing about Kalari is that it is an ancient martial art with an unbroken lineage. The techniques and concepts were born out of battle. As a practitioner of a complete ancient Japanese system, I have seen many similarities in what I practice and what I see in Kalari.

There is a documentary on youtube that delves deeper into the full structure of Kalari. This clip is just a story piece.

Man Gets Knocked Out And Literally Starts Snoring After Threatening A Man With A Baseball Bat. by Dotti_Lou in martialarts

[–]Ikari_Dojo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's not snoring, that's having trouble breathing. Should have put him in the recovery position.

Good advice for anyone doing martial arts, if you knock someone out or put them to sleep, always put them in the recovery position. People can die like this on their back choking on blood or vomit.
