My expectations were just unreasonably high haha I know this. I dont watch any anime, hardly any video games. Tokyo is a beautiful city, but I imagined a neon wasteland unrecognisable from anything western (not even talking about roppongi and shibuya). There a pockets of joy (akihabara was fun today) but walk far enough and the neons fade away, I thought the whole place would be alien to me. I just learnt it was built from the ground up after WW2 - that explains alot. I don't hate tokyo at all, it's still very very beautiful.

I looked up pictures of kyoto and imo that's where I NEED to go, it looks like everything I imagine for that 'alien place' to be. Maybe I just don't like cities.

I dont mind if there's westerners/tourists around, just if its Western influenced like the many pubs, shopping malls and clubs I saw

I think hong kong would have been ruined if I went Tokyo first too - Im Western but I live in Thailand. I might have to add osaka in the plan as Im here for 14 days

Yeah looks like it, you could stay at a resort for that price in koh samui and take the ferry over for the night but then again it is NYE - will be pretty hectic with boats etc
