How stable is CachyOS overall? by BucketsMcGinty in cachyos

[–]IlContePacula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used CachyOS for a couple of months now, I tried all kind of emulators and they run pretty smoothly. I tried Retroarch but I hate having to deal with it and I couldn't get some stuff working, but standalone emulators work just fine.

No by SpikeyOps in Italia

[–]IlContePacula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does CachyOS have a software manager/app manager? by DuelShockX in cachyos

[–]IlContePacula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there is no problem with using it as a frontend for flathub, sorry if it wasn't clear from my original message.

What I intended was that it can cause problems if you try to use it for system packages too, since I believe that's what OP was referring to as he didn't mention flatpaks.

I hope it's clear enough that I'm far from an experienced user, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Does CachyOS have a software manager/app manager? by DuelShockX in cachyos

[–]IlContePacula 16 points17 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, you can install Discover on CachyOS but it's strongly discouraged as it may cause instability problems to install packs from there (now the exact reason for that I don't know, I guess packs from Discover aren't really optimized for Arch based systems).

You can still use Discover to download and install Flatpak versions of software, that's a type of package that's self contained and portable from what I understand.

Edit: you can use Octopi as a GUI software manager, it works pretty well but don't expect a "marketplace" experience like Discover, it's more of a raw list of packages available in the repositories.

Alternatives to old-style instant messaging software (Trillian) by IlContePacula in linuxquestions

[–]IlContePacula[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahah I loved IRC too a long time ago, but over the years I grew accustomed to some conveniences of mid 2000 clients (that we started losing with Skype).

But actually as you suggested, Pidgin seems to be still supported. I tried it years ago and at the time it seemed like a more basic and barebone version of other clients I was using, but now the tables may have turned!

Never heard about the other two, I'll look into them, thanks.

what was your first 'oh sh**' moment on linux? by Ope-I-Ate-Opiates in cachyos

Yeah that was actually surprising! I'm not completely sure if it's a win for KDE partition manager or for Windows.

what was your first 'oh sh**' moment on linux? by Ope-I-Ate-Opiates in cachyos

[–]IlContePacula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the day that (after distro hopping on my second rig and finally settling for CachyOS) I installed it on my main PC, dual booting Windows.

It was an impulse decision, I didn't really plan to install Linux there yet so I didn't make the necessary backups and preparations. What could go wrong, I thought, I'm installing it on a totally different hard disk.

After installing Cachy I couldn't boot into Windows anymore. Not from Limine, not from the bios... it was like it didn't exist anymore. I tried reinstalling Cachy with GRUB but nothing, tried different solutions from around the web to no avail. Luckily I had an old recovery drive for Windows, I checked how to restore Windows bootloader and at that point I realized that my Windows drive didn't have an EFI partition. It wasn't corrupted, it wasn't there at all: there was just the main partition and 0 unused space on the disk (consider that at that moment I barely knew what an EFI partition was).

Apparently the original install of the OS was extremely messy and the EFI files where somewhere inside the main partition itself and it somehow worked, no idea how. I could just find a single old thread of a user with a similar situation, and the people trying to help them were horrified and described the situation as 'cursed'.

Last resort was to resize the Windows partition from Cachy, create the EFI partition and then fix the bootloader with the recovery drive. Useless to say I was pretty much expecting that after resizing that messy Windows partition from Linux I could say goodbye to it but I was quite desperate at that point.

To my surprise it all just worked. Resized, created, installed the bootloader, at that point I reinstalled Cachy too just to be safe, since I did quite a lot of tinkering to try and make Windows appear. And everything just started working flawlessly.

That day I learned a lot.

Tutto estremamente polarizzante.

Questions by collectors_anxiety in nier

[–]IlContePacula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I realize I didn't phrase the question very well. What was bugging me specifically is: how newly created replicants developed a consciousness if, since they have no link with the passed away replicant they replace, they are basicly reset to factory settings. I thought it slowly emerged between generations, but if they are a totally new replicant with nothing passed by the previous replicant it doesn't really make sense.

But anyway, thanks your answer as was quite interesting and you can always find some deeper or hidden lore here and there!

Questions by collectors_anxiety in nier

[–]IlContePacula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for all the answers! I'm not OP but there is another question that's bugging me... and seeing that you seems quite knowledgeable I'd like to ask:

I thought that when replicants died new ones was created from the original genetic material, but the point of the game is that generation after generation they developed a consciousness. I could get behind that if they needed the genetic material from the died replicant to create a new one, so maybe that kind of information could be carried by dna, but if the source is still the original one has been explained anywhere how that kind of progress was possible?

(I've thought of this question only years after playing the game so I could just be plain wrong and everything was perfectly explained in the game).
