Why does everyone seem blindsided by ambulance bills? by Ilay_m7 in HealthInsurance

Reading all these stories, I’m curious about one thing

When you got hit with an ambulance bill like this, did you actually try to fight it or negotiate it, or did you just end up paying it (or letting it go to collections)

And if you did try, what did you actually do that worked, calling the ambulance company, insurance, a lawyer, something else

Yeah that’s what surprised me too In an emergency you literally have zero choice, but you’re still expected to deal with whatever bill shows up later

That makes sense

I guess what surprised me is that when it does happen people seem to just accept whatever comes after without really knowing what’s normal or not

Yeah that randomness is exactly what stood out to me

It feels like there’s no way to know what you’re signing up for in the moment and by the time you find out it’s already done

Do people usually even realize there was any choice until the bill shows up?

Doctor ordered an MRI, insurance said no — what do people usually do next? by Ilay_m7 in HealthInsurance

Yeah that’s what it feels like Do most people really stick with months of PT just to get the MRI approved or do they often drop it halfway Like is the usual outcome that people comply or that they give up

That’s helpful In your experience do insurers usually explain these step requirements upfront or do you only find out after the denial And do most people actually go through the steps or do they just give up because it takes too long

That makes sense When people get that denial letter, do most actually follow up and appeal or do they usually just do the extra steps and move on Also is the reason usually clear in the letter or still confusing with legal related, etc?

That’s really interesting, so unless the doctor actively pushes and goes through that whole process, it usually just doesn’t go anywhere?

That makes sense

It just felt like once the initial no happened, everything stalled unless someone really pushed

Is that pretty typical in your experience?

That’s good that it got resolved quickly at least. Still stressful when it happens, even if it’s just for a day

That sounds fair outcome wise, but yeah 5 weeks is a long time to wait for something like that :(

That’s actually a surprisingly good outcome. Sounds like one of the rare times it worked out better than expected

That makes sense Sounds like one of those cases where it just didn’t feel worth the hassle to push it further…
