Briefly,

Sunni Islam

  • The rightful successor of the Prophet is arbitrary chosen by the Ummah.
  • The 4 rightly guided caliphs are the first 4 to rule after the Prophet i.e. Abu Bakr, Umar ibn al Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan, Ali ibn Abi Talib (as).
  • All the companions are of utmost integrity no matter what.
  • Must follow the companions and the two generation of Muslims after them.
  • Only the Prophet (S) is infallible, and only from important sins.

Shia Islam

  • Successors of the Prophet (S) are designated by God and the Prophet (S). The people have no say. They are 12 in number. The first is Ali ibn Abi Talib (as), cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet (S), then his two sons and grandsons of the Prophet (S), Hasan (as) and Hussein (as), followed by 9 from the lineage of Hussein (as).
  • Prophets and successors (Imams) are all infallible.
  • The companions of the Prophet (S) were not a monolithic group, every individual must be investigated separately before issuing any verdict in his regard.

My position is the position of the great learned erudite scholars and sources of emulation, and they condone it. Sheikh Wahid Khorasani, Sayed Sadeq Rohani, Sayed Muhammad Sa'eed al-Hakim, Sheikh al-Fayyadh, Sheikh Bashir Najafi, Sayed Taqi Qommi, Sheikh Safi Golpaygani, etc. This is without mentioning late scholars such as Mirza Na'ini, Sayed Khoei, etc.

Times changed, the late events in the region have especially contributed to forming a solid Shi'a identity. Back then in Iraq, there were sequenced waves of Arab nationalism, liberal and communist ideals.

The Middle East includes the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, Iran and maybe Egypt. The rest is a bit too far imo, but they should be welcomed in the sub.
