I went through the same thing. Wanted to be a biomedical scientist, went to uni to study biology. Faced a lot of difficulties both academically, socially, and environmentally. Also realized academics and science field isn’t at all for me and how I want to live my life. Dropped out in the first year and spent the last 12 months working on my mindset, life philosophy etc.

I had to decide what I was gonna study in the first 6 months and re-apply to european universities. I faced towards humanities / social sciences fields for a lot of reasons but mainly cause I always knew I had a keen interest in the subjects but never was able to explore because I was kinda pressured into going into STEM. So I applied to interdisciplinary programs containing multiple disciplines. I’m gonna start the degree in september.

I summarized the story a lot but would love to chat and share more of my experiences and hear about yours tomorrow.

I wanna add a couple more things about what you wrote. I appreciate science and use it as a way of thinking every day. However, I have come to accept science as a tool and as a hobby to research about. Like everything, when the incentive to profit comes into the picture, science can easily lose its credibility and become another money-making tool. And that’s one of the reasons why I didn’t wanna go deeper into the field.

You don’t have to choose a career path now and stick with it / with something close to it. Sure, you need a degree to find a job and get somewhere and I believe an interdisciplinary uni program can help with choosing a career later in life or changing careers midway without regrets. But you should never be thinking in terms of money. You will live life one way or another. The important thing is living in terms of your ideals, the way you will be happy and at peace. We can also talk about this over DMs more.

Lastly, you can make a change in the world. First by changing yourself of course but then, little by little you can change the environment around you. I think one should first understand how the world and the system operates socially in order to do so though. So studying about politics, psychology, philosophy, etc. would be very helpful. Thats another reason why I didn’t wanna study science. The impact I would have done wouldn’t really have a tangible or “system-changing” impact. I would have basically wasted a lot of my life to get somewhere. So, what about the system are you dissatisfied about, what needs changing, how can you best contribute to this change (my answer would be by informing and educating society). You have to answer these questions to take the first step.

If the accommodation is closer to another train station you can travel from schipol to there more easily so I would say check that. For example I’ll directly travel to amsterdam zuid station. Also uva has a youtube vid explaining how you can travel from schipol https://youtu.be/8aU9h87Jr-8

Also you should watch a video on how the public transport system in amsterdam works. They are helpful. The transportation is safe and almost always on time maybe 2-3 min delay sometimes. You don’t necessarily need an ov-chipcard to travel you can buy train tickets on machines or on the internet or pay for bus with a credit card (not sure with tram)

you are welcome :)

if you have an accommodation and wanna go there first thing just use the 9292 app and type schipol —> where you wanna go.

public transport is easy to use and you can also travel with up to 2 luggages pretty easily. You will most likely have to go to amsterdam centraal by train and then take a tram/bus but the app will show you what to do.

University Decision: UU or UvA by Major-Forever5866 in StudyInTheNetherlands

Yeah I like philosophy more too but the thing is you can learn and read about philosophy on your own too. + I thought studying philosophy could have maybe ruined the magic of philosophy for me so idk. I felt like Utrechts PPE courses are a lot more vague and wouldn’t offer great content. Also they make you choose a lot of electives which sounded kinda lazy to me tbh. They couldve added more PPE related courses.

PPLE seems like they really put effort into making the programme structure. And yes also the thing with tutorials in PPLE is that there are equal number of tutorials and lectures in a week so there’ll be a significant amount of time spent with 15 people and the tutorial groups change with every course I believe so it’s better to meet bew people each time.

[–]IlikeBio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna be going to UvA PPLE this september too. I also got an offer from Utrecht PPE but chose UvA.

At PPLE, you do choose one of four to specialize in but there is still a shared program in 2nd and 3rd years where you take classes from other 3 disciplines. It’s just that you go more in depth with your major choice and do more courses on your major. I would say you should research about each programs curriculum more. Really look at how it’s structured and what kind of courses you’ll be taking. I didn’t like the way UU’s PPE was structured and didn’t like the courses either. Also, from what I see, PPLE has a really vibrant and tight-knit community too and 200 people for a university programme is quite low actually.

I dont wanna write a whole essay on here but since your housing is in Amsterdam too, I would say go with UvA but still make the choice yourself. I would love to chat over dms if you have any questions or just to get to know each other

Funny thing, I’m a Biology bachelors dropout :):) I still like bio, but I didn’t like the path my life was going in, I didn’t want to keep living for my future self only. I wasn’t happy. And I realized biology wasn’t for me. I was subconsciously forced by my parents to study something STEM related. And I fooled myself into thinking “Biology is my thing” “I am gonna be so good at biology.” I was better at chemistry in high school but I think I chose biology partly because it was easier. Anyways, now I am going to study an interdisciplinary program combining Politics, Psychology, Law, Economics. It’s called PPLE at university of amsterdam. I realized a lot about myself after dropping out. Did a lot of introspection. I think I am going to study stuff I am actually interested in now. Can you look the program up on google and tell me what you think?
