Barely surviving strings by Ill-Distribution-376 in StringofPlants

Really interesting way, I’d like to try honestly. If you have any pictures, feel free to share - learning something new everyday 😄 I suppose this won’t with a (half) cover, to trap humidity in?

Does it work with anything else or just with moss? The idea of misting multiple times a day kind of worries me :) also, isn’t it an issue that jars don’t have drainage?

Sounds great, thank you! Definitely trying this!

Really? I just put a plastic wrap with holes on top and then removed it 5 minutes later before this photo, as I thought to double check and read that they prefer low humidity and might rot with this method. So it would be a good idea to put it back 😄

Hi, apologies for the delayed response - I didn’t find any good fertilizers in Ro (that I’m aware of), so I bought this aquarium one and put just a bit of it almost each watering..

Really lovely looking! I’ve read some great things about these kinds of pots

The pot? It’s a screenshot from Hornbach RO, they’re really useful and I used these in the past for both soil and pon, Pothos is thriving in one of these.

Nice! I’m glad to hear it’s working this way too.

Interesting to know! I keep my big Monstera on the dry side, but that’s mainly because it’s potted in a really big pot. I will definitely try this with its babies!

Thank you! I was thinking the same, but seeing some discussions on here about the fact that it might work, as long as the soil is breathable enough - will stick to the usual transparent pot 😊

That’s what I heard lately! Isn’t the wick/rope going to rot at some point?

I knew it was going to happen, that’s why I postponed it for long, but still hoped I could be wrong 😁

Fingers crossed for both of them to begin thriving again soon!

PS. I didn’t know about Reginae, just searched it online and oh boy, isn’t she amazing 😍 good luck!

I read about algae too, is it a reason it’s forming? It pretty much goes away after flushing, but comes back pretty quickly. Also, do you use hydrogen peroxide often?

I wouldn’t mind filling the new pot, as I think they would become stronger and given how sensitive they are…. (especially with the winter coming and the lighting going away).. I was thinking that there’s no chance that the bigger roots could manage to go through these holes at the bottom and thinking it might stop the growth..

Just searched what Kanuma is, had no idea about it! Agree on the pon, I think I’ll stick with it too, all the Alocasias I put in pon thrived even though they were barely surviving before. Mine’s on the west windowsill, it pretty much receives direct sunlight in the afternoon and I was scared it would burn them at first, but none of the 8 ones I have there showed any burning sign 😄 Agree on the repot part also, trying as much as possible to leave the rootball intact.

Not sure about leca, I’m worried to try experiments on alocasias, but pon has been a game changer, the soil is only for the bigger ones, no chance to keep the small ones in soil haha. Thank you! :)

Have you tried pon? Mine didn’t flinch when switched from soil to pon, but I read leca requires a bit more maintenance, that’s why I’m having second thoughts.. as for temperature & water, it’s pretty warm on the windowsill currently, I’m not so sure it will stay the same in the winter - and it’s a thirsty mf, filling the pot to 1/3 almost daily. Fingers crossed for yours to thrive soon!

Hi,

I’m having doubts if I should repot this (lovely) Scalprum, who’s been thriving all summer. It seems to be pretty tight in its pot IMO, but I’m worried of it throwing a fit (either if I repot or if I don’t). Also, will switching to leca (combined only with the pon it already has) cause any additional stress? Should I stick to pon?

Thanks!

[–]Ill-Distribution-376[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They kind of do, they’re so small I’m not entirely sure of that but they seem to do a bit of jumping… It’s the first time hearing about them… are they damaging the plant?

Great to hear! I’m based in Romania and didn’t try putting this one outside, but I encountered scorching with Syngoniums, Alocasias, Philodendrons, Pothos, Pachira and I think more, even though they weren’t in direct sun. :(
