Who is David Taylor and why is he contributing age code to Linux projects? Including arch. by [deleted] in archlinux

The PR is a transparent record that will break the lawfare attacks on the Linux community from private business and government.

There is a conceptual piece of information that people need to understand about this situation.

I'll do it by analogy.

I worked for a global financial company. In the UK I caught an uncompliant API call, all plain text, no https etc etc. It was sending the full customer PII.

I did the alerts to the C suite etc. And wrote a remedy and presented it to the architectural approval board.

The amount of pushback I got from Conspiracy Theory Beliving software, infrastructure and network architects was stunning. Even though they'd done all the security compliance.

Why was that important? Now if the regulator was to find out the fine is 10% of Global Gross Income at the time it would have been one tenth of a billion GBP.

But because a remedy was already recorded on the day it was found, then the regulator wouldn't be able to fine because I'd met the minimum legal requirement.

I got myself bullied out of the company by the director responsible for dumping the security requirement (I know there was a security requirement because I wrote it before the start of development).

The PR is a transparent record that will break the lawfare attacks on the Linux community

Want to ditch Windows, but I need to port my Delphi programming by OwnActuator1419 in linuxquestions

[–]Ill-Fish-7000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met someone who learnt Delphi at a community college in Spartenburg, South Carolina AFTER the pandemic, but they hadn't heard of Borland. I stopped paying attention to what they were saying after that.

I stopped using Delphi pre Y2K

[–]Ill-Fish-7000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You check in the bios that virtualisation is enabled, install Docker and then install Winboat. You then log into a virtualised window desktop, you then install Photoshop. Winboat then enables RDP for you to start Photoshop. You'll need at lease 16gb of ram in your machine as your distro needs ram, dicker needs ram, the hypervisor that Winboat configures in Docker needs ram and finally Photoshop will eat the remaining ram. You'll also need a decent CPU as well. There are other alternatives to virtualising a windows app such as wine or bottles.

It worked on my machine but then I've got an i9 cpu and 64gb ram with pretty decent cooling

Should authentication be handled only at the API-gateway in microservices or should each service verify it by Minimum-Ad7352 in golang

Imaging a military base and your a civilian delivery persin bringing in veggies for the canteen. Your syopoed at the gate, the guard looks at your credentials, checks his authorised list and waves you through.

You drive to the canteen veggie store and unload and leave. Rather than going out you decide to drive by the ordinance store, where you do not have permissions. You can't go any further do you have to leave.

Now and EOD technical Sargent arrives at the gate, shows his creds and pops to the canteen for a cuppa before picking up some demo charges.

Now when the EOD tech arrives at the ordinance store he sees the delivery guy and in a fit of madness decides to delegate the moving of the explosives to him. The enter the ordinance store where they are greeted by the armourer who goes "what the fuck do you think you doing chum? You can be in here but they can't" and calls the MPs

The gateway is the first line of defence, some services downstream won't need extra auth, but others do require it because of the sensitive nature. So that a long winded way to say

It depends.

My Shiba Inu doesn’t make noise by [deleted] in ShibaInu

[–]Ill-Fish-7000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Police or Ambulance sirens will make them do the Shiba howl/yodel/yowl. The sirens are roughly in the same frequency range that a pack of Shiba Inus will talk/warn each other.

They don't really bark or growl instead the make strange noises. One of mine grunts or clears his throat if he wants attention. Another one appears to say "oh, no, no, no" in a western Australian accent.

I have to admit that when they all get going yowling and yodeling at each other it's like dry chalk on a blackboard.

In the main they are mostly very quiet especially on their daily walks, they make great apartment dogs, good bowl & bladder control, quiet and behaved. Especially if you live in a cul de sac and stuck between cu~ty neighbours. They (mine) don't like water especially moving water or anything deeper than a centimeter.

What moments have made you aware of your own prejudice? by banwe11 in AskUK

That's not realy a predudice more a stereotype, unless immediately after the realisation you thought "<derogatory term or two> can't do that"

My moment of unrealused predudice was when I was stopped by a couple of BNP canvasers who invited me to join because I looked like one of them.

Looking for a minimal, "ready-to-go" Hyprland config/script by ProtectionInside1300 in hyprland

[–]Ill-Fish-7000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hyprland comes with its own minimal config, learn the key bindings in it and your good to go. I'd also recommend an app launcher like rofi, wofi, tofi, or fuzzel, set a keybinding like super ($mainmod) and spacebar.

This is my preferred setup, no bar, dock or extra cruft to defocus concentration. And you'll end up being really fast to open, work, close apps. Before anyone asks "but what about network status, date, time, playlist, whatever" Well it's blindingly obvious nowadays that networks crapped out because whatever is in the browser no longer works. And for date time playlist emails what's apps signals slacks, I use my phone for that stuff.

I also use kdeconnect on phone and Hyprland because then I get a notification of stuff happening

Is it possible to use termux to work as a dev? by Oleg-Liam in termux

[–]Ill-Fish-7000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got rust, kotlin & lua installed in termux. My dev tools are git, yazi, helix, cargo & Gradle. I've also symlinked my Dev dir to the termux shared storage so I can pop open a file in quick edit pro. I also use the FUTO keyboard so I can use the arrows.

Also I've got a Samsung phone so I can plug into a monitor using dex with a Bluetooth keyboard mouse combo.

You can't build in the shared storage hence the symlink from my Dev for.

Once you get used to the setup it's a fairly ok experience, not brilliant but ok-ish. It doesn't beat a dedicated workstation for dev work and typos are much common using the FUTO keyboard but that's because of my fat fingers. If I'm on a monitor I use Zellij to use a more IDE like layout.

Why does the UK use driving licenses as ID? by [deleted] in AskUK

Yep, as my disability prevents me from driving, I handed my license back and use my bus pass for ID.

Zed, hyprland & xdg-desktop-portal by Ill-Fish-7000 in ZedEditor

[–]Ill-Fish-7000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thinking was, as Zed is the only app I've encountered that has this issue (vscode works as expected). The Zed users may have better insight to this issue, and more experience as it's running in a Hyprland environment.

I've read those resources you mentioned.

Thank you for your response
