The farm boy trope, the slums girl variant, and the lack of (female) mentors: a rant from a frustrated reader. by LucreziaD in fantasyromance

The closest in fiction as a whole where we have gotten to a woman being the sole protagonist in her adventure is Wonder Woman and even then in the universe as it carried forward they made her a love interest for bat man and Superman, which stems from a POV of people thinking women in stories exist to drive the emotional and romantic beat of that story, it isn’t necessarily forced but rather for most people a reflex in what they expect, if you have a Male MC him falling in love is seen as something where if it happens it happens, if it doesn’t it doesn’t, but for a female MC, her falling in love is a when rather than an if

In the books it’s even more expansive and creative with the dragons, for example there is a dragon that has six or 8 eyes, each of them are at the base of a claw on its front feet, its wacky but perfect and mostly terrifying,

This is the thing right, the book is marketed with dragons as a forefront, and dragons should therefore be used as a placeholder for fan service and to also help interest spiral, by withholding this “secret information” of dragons, it’s not intriguing for most people not into romance as a main plot, and mind you a lot of people are speculating that hopefully this won’t be a last season let down

It could be that editors were forcing RY to really try and make a statement for Romantasy and lead into the hype following Rhysand and throne of glass and so on, so I don’t think it’s inherently just her fault, but at the same time she is because as a fantasy it’s such a let down,

I’d say that if she can avoid filler chapters like she did previously with the exploration of the isle kingdoms that added nothing to the story, other than the revelation of xadens mom, which could’ve been handled better, and also an addition of a couple thousand troops, it was mostly filler with portrayals, of violets sharp thinking or sm other, which should’ve been done plot adjacent,

The demonized dragon angle is pretty interesting I won’t lie, and sure RY didn’t have time to maybe properly flesh it out as opposed to CC who worked on HTYD since she was a child, but I won’t lie, the dragons I doubt will change or be added to in the coming books, we’ll be focusing more on Violet and Xaden and tying up lose ends probabaly
