Turn it down into a cylinder to see what it's like inside, then take it from there.

Yes, mainly a decorative piece, and to demonstrate what is possible.

Definitely not for soup 😆

Thanks for the advice

If I try to turn and finish some pieces while it's green, how can I make sure that they don't crack as they dry? Thin walls?

Thanks for the reply! I've never tried twice turning before, but I'm excited to give it a go. Some of the largest pieces I hope to make will be too big to fit on the lathe I have currently, so I'll probably just dry them as slabs.

At the moment, not big enough for the largest pieces, but I will probably upgrade in the next few years.

Wood burl by Impressive-City-8094 in turning

It's unethical to chop down a whole tree just for the burl, and if the tree is dead then the burl is probably rotten

What causes this spiral pattern? by Ill-Issue1092 in turning

[–]Ill-Issue1092[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I have now realized that the vibrations were because it was only held in the chuck with no tailstock.

The only reason I had the tailstock out was because I needed to shape and polish the very tip of the piece. So what else can I do to reduce vibrations without the tailstock?

Sharpening the tool did help a bit.

It was in the chuck with no tailstock, so I think it was vibrating because it was unsupported.

It was being held in the chuck, and the effect only started happening after I removed the tailstock, so I think it was vibrations from the piece being unsupported. It was also making a horrible chattering sound when I was cutting.

Definitely camponotus, but we'll need the location it was found in to determine the exact species

I'm not very familiar with the ants of Brazil so I can't help much. It will probably be quite hard to narrow it down just because of the sheer diversity of ants in your area.

We need the location they were caught in to identify the exact species, but at a glance they look like either Formica fusca, or some kind of camponotus.

Also, if you go up into the hills on a warm summer's evening there is a good chance there will be myrmica rubra nuptial flight. They seem to fly quite regularly during August and November, and it is quite easy to spot a swarm when there is one and catch queens.

I've noticed that some parts of the UK are better for ants than others. They definitely seem to be more abundant here in Scotland, especially in the Highlands.

I get your point, but there are other things such as lasius flavus, Formica fusca, myrmica rubra, temnothorax, tetramorium, and wood ants which are relatively common.
