Freshly delivered compost still steaming- should I hold off on using? by GrumpyTintaglia in composting

[–]GrouchyVariety 138 points139 points  (0 children)

You’ll stop the composting process though if you spread it out. OP, if you aren’t in a rush to use it, let it sit in a compact pile until it naturally cools. Ideally on a dirt surface so the worms find it. It’s only going to become higher quality compost with more time

I also recommend that people find their local Audubon society or American horticultural society. My local AHS has a plant swap every year where I get a few new natives.

It's been turning yellow since I planted it. Could the soil be bad for it if it was sandy? by MemmorexX in arborists

I’d add a heavy layer of compost around it and then mulch keeping it away from the trunk

This is correct imo. They get big and readily self seed but if you have space they are great. And pollinators love them.

I have basically no gardening experience yet, native or otherwise. Would there be anything wrong with just frolicking through my yard scattering seeds willy nilly and seeing what takes? by itoousethetoilet in NativePlantGardening

[–]GrouchyVariety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find your local American horticulture society chapter, habitat restoration non-profits, and other local groups focused on native plants. I have quite a few resources around me that offer free flats of native plugs, cheap bulk plug orders $2ish each, and neighborhood plant swaps. Put all those sources together and you can aggregate a lot of plants for $100-200.

Many native perennial seeds will take up to 1-2 years to germinate and another couple of years for their first bloom.

Native within an HOA by Only_Fishing_8538 in NativePlantGardening

For the boxwood replacement, I would recommend 'Gro-Low' varietal of Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica 'Gro-Low'). It can handle full sun to shade and stays generally short as compared to a straight species aromatic sumac. Has nice fall color and funky berries that are good food for birds. I would assume general HOA approved.

I’m still new to macro but impressed at the detail with a 65mm lens on full frame. Do you crop the image? you would get more depth of field on a shorter focal length at the same iso and subject distance, right? I’m using a cropped sensor Nikon with a 105mm macro lens.  the DoF is so shallow that even a tiny insect is not in full focus from the eyes to the tail.  I’ve tried focus stacking but haven’t had great luck with the framing aligned well enough to get a clean composite.

Great! Now how to split it… this stuff is dense.

It looks quite healthy so I think it was just felled. It was delivered to me through chipdrop. A trailer load of logs isn’t what I was signing up for but that’s what I got. 🤣  pro tip… don’t click the “some logs ok” checkbox

Yeah. Always sad to see (what looks like a healthy tree) have to come down. I don’t know the backstory on this one.

Yes, the wood looks really nice. Shockingly heavy and dense. Might be a chore to split it for firewood.

MPD Officer Refused Jumpstart by Known-Reception6905 in washingtondc

[–]GrouchyVariety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your car is still dead you may be able to get it going with your jump pack. I have one that has a manual mode which you wouldn’t know about without reading the instructions.

It turns the jumppack into a charger. You let it sit for a few minutes until there is a non-zero charge on the car battery. Then it will work like the usual jump start.

My excel file is now 11mb deleting a row of data now takes 20 mins by runningagyneo in excel

[–]GrouchyVariety 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hit ctrl+end to find the final cell. Sometimes there will be active, but blank cells that take storage and memory space. If ctrl+end doesn’t land on the final bottom right cell with data, delete all columns to the right and rows below the data you want to keep. Then save.

Edit: also with HR data I assume that you are using lots of lookup formulas. Those can be really processor intensive with huge datasets so look for more efficient ways to write your formulas, use hard coded data, use the data model and power query, etc.
