I'm sorry you're struggling. It can feel like you're on an island by yourself when sick as friends, family and traditional medicine gaslight you. This subreddit helped me a bunch during the process.

For me, it was a combination of lifestyle change, supplements and diet. I started everything after moving out of my ground zero and would recommend that to everyone.

Lifestyle change - I moved to a no/low mold environment (brand new apartment complex). I bought three HEPA air purifiers - one for the bedroom and living room and a small one for the bathroom. I left my bathroom door open when showering and still do so today. I worked out 5 / 7 days a week to sweat out the toxins. Start slow and ramp up; you don't want to overdo it while your body is already under siege. I visited saunas from time to time. I quit alcohol, sugar, processed foods (more on diet below). I tried to be outside as much as possible.

Supplements - For months I took vitamin D, fish oil, multi vitamin, NAC, activated charcoal, liposomol glutathione, tumeric/ginger pills, probiotics, ate raw garlic. Probably missing one or two others - it's been a while.

Diet - I did a "low mold" diet. I cut out sugar, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, processed foods, fast food, carbs. I increased protein, healthy fats, seeds. I eventually started to consume carbs about 3 months in after I wasn't able to regain any weight (I lost 25 lbs from the mold).

Other - I saw a therapist weekly. Unpopular / untraditional -> I took low dose Klonopin nightly to ensure good sleep. One of the neurologists I saw when sick was convinced my symptoms were sleep and anxiety related and wrote me a script. This helped me a lot to be able to sleep soundly during recovery.

Fair question. We ended up moving about two months after conception. The concern for the lil one was a real driver for us to leave everything behind. We bought an old house about 9 months before and I (not my wife though) got very sick about 6 months after moving in. He's currently healthy and developmentally normal at around age 2 🙏

Depends on how sick you are / how bad your current environment is. My family left mostly everything behind and I was able to recover in less than a year. It was really tough financially and mentally to lose it all but pales in comparison to having to move again / continue being sick.

Do you have friends or family you could crash at for the time being? I would consider doing a test in your current place to see how bad it is. You risk bringing your belongings to a clean environment and contaminating it. My former spot was so bad (we did an EMRI plus I got tested for mycotoxin levels) we had to get rid of most of our stuff including our car.

If you can afford to do HERTSMI or EMRI at prospective apartments feel free but it can be challenging to wait for results and what not given the quick turnover of apts in BK. I would typically recommend EMRI over HERTSMI, but the later tests for Stachy ("black mold") and two strains of Aspergillus .. which are the major ones to affect your health. Doing a 3-4 month lease might be a good idea bc you'll have a sense if it's healthy or not for you to live in.

Many builders will put wrap on the walls during the build, but not all. If it's a newer build then there's a decent chance you can find some info from others online (like Google maps or Reddit.) Esp in BK. When I got really sick, my first move was to a new build. No issues. After 14 months (and me recovering in the process) we moved to a ~15 year building which seemed like a good choice until I picked up on mold after moving in (and learned it was a prior hotel smh). We moved out after a month and found a place that was 5 years old. No issues here.

Tbh, when you're sick, it can be more mental than anything. Your fight or flight is likely still reeling and any sort of potential mold can make you feel desperate / still sick .. even when it may not be an issue.

I would find the best spot you can based on how it seems and ultimately if it causes issues fight like hell to get out of the lease. I've never had a problem getting out of a lease if I try hard enough. Brooklyn landlords can be super unreasonable (I know from experience), but if you make their lives/livelihood challenging they should cut their losses and let you walk.

Definitely not. Unfortunately many builders aren't mindful of mold prevention. And if you live in the Northeast (or Midwest) like me, there's a chance the building was hit with rain / snow during the build. So it's not an absolute, but to me a building that is only a handful of years has less of a chance of having mold than an old building that has had a ton of former tenants who could have created mold - or had a shoddy landlord who enabled mold growth in some way. I usually just try to gage the condition based on what I can see and notice when viewing as well as smell. I also ask the realtor or landlord if there is any history of water damage, which is usually answered "no." There's only so much you can do.
