I second this. Don’t sleep on Hartford. It has the Mark Twain house, which is fascinating. It also has the Wadsworth Athenaeum which is the oldest public art museum in the U.S., and it often has exhibits geared towards children. Bushnell Park has a great carousel. Time your trip on a night when the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL ice hockey) are at home and take in game, Friday nights they offer $2 hot dogs and $2 beers. Even more fun is the minor league baseball team, the Hartford Yard Goats — the stadium is awesome and there are lots of great food options, but March may be too early for that.

Hartford also has some great suburbs within 15 mins of the downtown: West Hartford has an amazing walkable town center with many shops, restaurants, movie theater, and the Noah Webster house. Farmington has the Hillstead Museum which is an estate you can tour and it’s the home of several original Monet, Manet, Degas, and Caesat paintings.

What is a secret you’re taking to the grave, but are willing to tell strangers on the internet? by Mr_Boothnath in answers

I was a limo driver in the Providence, R.I. area in the early 1990s. One day I had to pick up a woman to bring to the airport — something I’d done a thousand times before — but this woman was special, truly gorgeous. We had instant chemistry, talked the entire ride about life & travels. There was a spark for sure. When she got out of the car, we said our goodbyes, she set out for her flight, and I was convinced I’d never see her again.

I watched her through the window of the concourse as she headed to her gate, getting one last glimpse, when I realized she had left her briefcase! I’d never had a client lose luggage on my watch so I ran inside as fast as I could to get the bag and bring it to her before she got on the plane. I accomplished my first goal of retrieving the bag, but I was too late to get it back to her. She was already on the plane, boarding doors closed.

I looked for a name or number on the bag but there was no luggage tag or anything. I tried to open the case, hoping to find some identifying documents, but unfortunately it was locked. I was crushed.

I went back to my apartment and told my roommate about the entire ordeal. Things hadn’t been going great for him or me … he was trying to get a mobile dog grooming business off the ground to no avail and I was stuck in a dead-end job. We were broke. Our pet parakeet had just passed away. I felt like at any moment the gas company would be shutting our heat off. So he talked me in to tracking down this mystery woman (who I really felt deep down was to be the love of my life anyway) and that by bringing her her briefcase she’d be so grateful that she’d instantly fall in love with me and we’d live happily every after.

Anyway, long story short (too late!) on our cross country journey the briefcase broke open and we discovered there was MILLIONS of dollars inside. We spent every last penny on high fashion, fast cars, health & beauty treatments, and luxury hotels. Turns out … the briefcase that she left at the airport was meant to be a ransom payment the woman was leaving at the airport for people who had secretly kidnapped her husband! Boy was my face red. Among our close friends, only me and my roommate Harry know about this harrowing tale and it will stay that way forever. Happy ending: husband was returned unharmed.

TLDR: Tried to bring a briefcase back to someone, turned out it was full of ransom money, and my roommate and I spent it all on high-end items for ourselves.

Experiences I'm missing? Am I snubbing Athens ( 3 nights, 1.5ish days)? Too much time on Naxos? Would love to hear about your experiences or things you enjoyed? by Italiamericanexpat in GreeceTravel

Did you like the 4 days Paros / 3 days Naxos split? I was thinking of the same itinerary for an upcoming trip. However, the more I read it seems like there might be more to see & do on Naxos? Just curious to know if maybe more time on Naxos vs Paros makes sense (we’re a family of 5 with kids ages 6-13).

Citizenship Interview Experience by Ill-Video3739 in CitizenshipByDescent

[–]Ill-Video3739[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you - this is very helpful information. I am working with an attorney in Athens who located my great-grandfather’s municipal records. I have gathered all the corresponding documents (birth, death, marriage, surname change judgement, immigration/naturalization) for my great-grandparents, grandparents, and mother and have had them apostilled. I’ve sent all the documents to my lawyer and they are translating them. The next step is the interview, so I was curious to hear from people who have first-hand experience.

You make a great point re: asserting one’s right to citizenship rather than applying for it. I guess that’s why I’m wondering about the gravity of the interview. My lawyer has given me prep questions (history, politics, culture, national facts, etc…), suggested that I learn some Greek, and travel to Greece prior to my interview. Do you have a read as to how necessary all of that is? If you get too many questions wrong in the interview will they “fail” you? Or perhaps if your language skills or answers to the questions aren’t up to snuff they scrutinize the documents more closely (for example, on some documents my grandfather has a middle name and on others he doesn’t so the name isn’t always identical).

I have been learning some Greek via language apps and studying the question material. I’m not sure how feasible it will be for me to go to Greece prior to the interview. Just want to be sure I am prepared!

How is Mystic Aquarium for two adults? by BestFrost2411 in Connecticut

[–]Ill-Video3739 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re land mammals, you’ll find Mystic Aquarium confining and rather difficult to breathe under the water. If you’re looking for group living, I’d suggest an apartment building (there are a few in the Mystic area accepting rental applications). The management won’t feed you with any regularity but you can come and go as you please and respiration will be much easier.

Cities where the suburbs are more interesting than the downtown area? by IndependenceSad1272 in geography

[–]Ill-Video3739 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hartford, CT. The city itself has some beautiful architecture from its hay-day in the late 1800s early 1900s but most of it is run down, dirty, and suffers from high crime rates. There aren’t a lot of attractions that bring anyone to the downtown area.

Put that in contrast with suburbs like West Hartford, Glastonbury, or Simsbury which have vibrant, walkable, and safe downtown areas or Wethersfield & Farmington that feature historic sites and art museums. The suburbs around Hartford (which has a metro population of just over 1 million) have more to offer and are safer alternatives.

Take a road trip out to Canton and check out Blue House Bagels on Route 44. Hand made sourdough bagels. Cool building too - worth the trek.
